QBS in the Portal as of 11/28

A lot more people on this board would like him if he was from Houston Texas. Being Cuban and having ties to Mario is a negative for a lot of people.

Nah, there isn't enough separation between him an Emory to be worth it for Mendoza or []__[].

Curious to hear folks' opinion on this hypothetical:
  • Mateer doesn't choose Miami
  • Miami has a wink and a nod agreement with Ewers to come here after Texas is done in the playoff
  • Mendoza wants to come to Miami and will commit by the end of next week
Do we say no to Mendoza and take the risk that if Ewers shows out in the playoff that he renegs on us and goes into the draft?

In this scenario, I would take Mendoza. Can’t trust these kids in this era. Especially after the playoff other teams like Oregon/Ohio state could be in the market and swoop in.

With that said, I don’t think we got it like that with Mendoza. I think Miami has inclination that maybe Mateer, Ewers, and more (Milroe etc.) are other potentials out there that could enter. You roll your dice with some of the others vs locking going all in on Mendoza.

I think you should log off for a while. Come back refreshed.

Of course...

Emory has sweat equity and knows the system very well; whomever you bring has to beat him CONVINCINGLY for the job.

Which of the two QBs in your hypothetical is more likely to CONVINCINGLY beat Emory out for the Job?

I’m not even sold he beats out Emory. If you’re going to run with either of the two, you better really fix that defense because our offense will regress significantly. It can get ugly.
In a vacuum I’d take him over Emory. But if what D$ and Peter were saying on today’s pod was true, that he’ll be getting $1mm+, that’s a horrible move.

Yeah, if those are our only options and CJ Daniels and Rivers are satisfied with Mendoza, then I'm taking Mendoza and calling it a day. As we discovered last year, the longer it takes the QB position to get resolved in the portal, the worse your portal WR haul will be. Wait for Ewers, perhaps the best portal WR we can get is Virgil (whom I like, but not as the only addition to the room).

To your second graph, since Arnold wants to stay in the SEC and/or we're not interested hopefully we're backchanneling trying to get a guy like Robertson from Baylor to enter the portal. He'd also likely solidify the winter portal WR haul, and I'd rate him higher for us next year than Mendoza.

After the success that happened this year with Cam, I don’t think Mario goes budget shopping on QB. They will, right or wrong, put all their eggs in 1 or 2 baskets (sounds like Mateer and maybe Ewers?).

In fact, I think if Mario is wise, he will use his time during the Heisman ceremony to talk about how the staff worked with Cam to ensure the highest amount of success. It will basically be an informerical.

Mario is banking on that to be the nectar that attracts the target he is after. (and lots of $$$).

Mario also needs to convince said QB that we have shored up our deficiencies on defense as well.

All 3 of those QBs would convincingly beat out Emory, and I don't think it would be a contest.
