Punt return

Fellas, the days of punt returners retuning multiple punts, "to the house", is slowly, and sadly coming to an end. Due to rule changes (blind side blocking), Rugby style punters, spread punt formations, and Punters getting so much height on these punts now, that it's really hard to take one back. The most valuable returners of this era, are the ones, that can FIRST... reliably field the punts. SECONDLY, not cost us any negative yardage, by not catching the ball. And THIRDLY, be shifty enough to split a seam in the coverage unit and get positive yardage... and IF he gets the chance.... house it.

We dont even try to set up the return. Staff cares about getting a guy who won't muff a punt nothing else
You can't really set up punt returns anymore because of the rule changes regarding the blind side blocks. That change took away the wall return. It was a safety issue. Now teams, just want a guy to catch it, and get up field, if he can.

I dont think it was questionable, on the catch on the 5, I think he was lined up at like the 6 or 8 so yes he did take a step or two back which generally is a no no but IIRC there was a good amount of hangtime and he was surrounded so yes small chance it bounces back towards the 10, small chance it skips into the endzone, but also a chance it rolls inside of the 5 and we are starting at the 1 or 2 so I was ok with it.

On the BC one, I do think he was trying to make a play but he got a great big hop and again, if he doesnt touch it it likely rolls inside the 10. Tough calls in the moment but I was okay with it, especially because it took that big bounce and made for an easy grab.

Restrepo used to do similar things early on. People criticized it but I saw him as a young pup wanting to make a big play. That’s a good trait. The better decision making comes with experience.

Agreed. But I do remember one restrepo play where he basically fielded the equivalent of a groundball in baseball. I would say that was reckless, even though he was trying to make a play and like you said its a good trait that served him well here. I am not convinced that Toney's was reckless. It took one huge bounce and hit him easily in the chest and he saved potential lost yards. To me it was a 50/50 call.

Don’t trust a guy who is pushing guys out of the way to avoid a fumble and catching a ball that bounces to him so perfectly it’s like they tried? K

Dude has looked more comfortable then anyone back there since Berrios.

He also took on 3 ND players with no blockers and got 10 yards.

He will bust one in next couple games. I am curious what his long speed look like.

Christ and I thought I was an angry dude. He’s a true freshman for ***** sake. He’s done his job. If you are expecting Devin Hester back there then I’m sorry but you won’t see that anytime soon.
The current rule sets essentially prevent another Devin Hester from ever emerging.

Ray Ray needs a crash course in track. Dudes strides are so short, he could cover so much more ground if he fixed his running form.
