Protect College Sports Act [formerly “SCORE Act” thread]

It'd be good if the best teams in the Big XII and ACC joined together to form a third 'power conference'.

SEC and B1G will not let that happen. This is a straight-up duopoly. Competitors on the fields and courts; Partners in the business realm.

Sankey and Pettiti are wisely focused on consolidating all power.

You let a third conference grow with viable brands like UM and you open the door for private equity to get involved and create a legitimate escape hatch for unhappy schools.

The SEC and B1G are gonna poach about every available worthwhile power conference brand/market so as to quash any and all future threats.

The Big XII will come behind to absorb the best of the rest from the ACC and the G6 conferences.

ACC as we know it gonna be dead in the water a la the Pac-12

You can absolutely make more money independent than in a conference if you have the brand. The President wouldnt make that comment if he didnt mean it. Ofc it’s not the preference, but it’s not a bad fall back either. The biggest problem w going independe is theres a duopoly forming w the SEC and BIG 10, w smoke they are about to announce a scheduling agreement to game the new playoff system. We would get locked out of a meaningful schedule and basically still be in the ACC.
I hate to be that guy but we don’t have that kind of brand to generate more money as an independent. To be fair, 99% of the schools don’t have it. Joe is overselling Miami to put more pressure on Big X or SEC to add us as a member. This dude gets it. Also, this would make life more difficult for our athletic department in many other ways. IMO, the future of this program depends heavily on us getting into a P2. Mario isn’t gonna be here forever and Miami will go down once again (like every top tier program) and we need to be secured financially and politically wise when that happens.

Lmfao yeah dude Florida and Texas A&M are going to leave the SEC

It's literally about money. If a new conference can earn them more money then they could leave.

The entire thing is imploding before our eyes, college football is almost unrecognizable to what it was 10 years ago, and you think it's crazy that a team would leave a conference? Texas A&M already left their conference once.

None of this stops with this protect college sports act. I don't think people realize how insane this entire thing is about to become.

Go ahead and tag me when another conference gets more money than the SEC or B1G, I’ll be waiting for the notification.

This article today from FootballScoop.com seems relevant:

Like it or not, the College Football Playoff is expected to expand to 24 teams beginning with the 2027 season
.
Once that happens, Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt expects the SEC and Big Ten to strike a non-conference scheduling agreement, to be announced soon after CFP expansion becomes official.

"There are scheduling agreements that are in place once this thing expands officially," Klatt told KTCK-FM 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas on Wednesday. "The next thing that will happen almost immediately is we're going to get scheduling agreements between the SEC and the Big Ten -- top-end matchups, mid-tier matchups, low-end matchups -- and we're going to be expanding the valuable matchups in the non-conference, far surpassing what we have now."

Been saying this was in the mix. Just wait: The SEC and B1G are gonna expand to 24 or 25 schools each and play a conference-wide SEC vs B1G Challenge series (similar to what we've see in hoops). 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰

I'd guess we'd see these games spread over the month of September. Considering how tribal College Football fans ate, this would be a marketer's wet dream. Easily can envision Netflix or Prime jumping all over this.

The conference doesn't need to make more money, the individual teams do. The BIG10 has to pay Purdue, Maryland, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, Michigan State...they all dilute the earnings of the bigger teams.

Fine let me reword it.

I have been curious about this, because it has been mentioned here before, and I’m not informed at all about it.

UM already receives high research funding. UM is the #39 funded institution nationally from the NIH (https://brimr.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/SchoolOfMedicine_2025.xlsx), cites $389m federal and $127m non-federal awards for a total of $526m in FY25 (https://www.research.miami.edu/about/research-impact/index.html), and claims a $772m total FY25 award amount per this page (not sure where the extra $250m is coming from; https://www.research.miami.edu/).

What research grant money does the Big Ten specifically have access to that we do not already have by being in the ACC? Is there a dollar amount? Is it the label of being in the Big Ten attractive to grant distributors? The only substantive things I saw publicly online about the Big Ten research alliance were about shared library and network resources, which seem like relatively small potatoes compared to our annual research spend.

Thanks for your insight!
The B1G Academic Alliance manages over $15B a year in research funding.

24-team playoff changes the long term calculus and at least creates a legit argument for going independent.
if the CFP demands a 10 game P4 schedule and the SEC/B1G play 9 conference games and then a 10th game against each other every year, I have no idea how we'd even become eligible if we leave the ACC (assuming they wouldn't agree to some kind of scheduling agreement with us)

Joe E also letting both the B1G and SEC know that we'll negotiate with both of them so bring your best offers....

I disagree. And I think several other schools are thinking about going the same route depending on how this legislation shakes out. If that happens, you may actually see momentum the other way, with some schools leaving the P2.
