ND would continue their 5 ACC opponents for the same reason they would continue to play Clemson for 10 years.....they are contracted to.Agreed on the latter; but if the former is about to happen, and Clemson + ND already have a ten year contract until 2037 to play each other every year, why would ND stay in the ACC for all sports except football; and why would ND continue their 5 ACC opponents annually? I think ND would almost be forced to join and i feel like the B1G would boxout FSU for ND or UNC.
All Rhetorical questions because realignment causes domino effects. We also hear the often repeated line about needing to be an AAU school (exception made for Nebraska) to join the B1G; and FSU isn’t one. Don’t believe it’ll come to this but we’ll see

Cal / Stanford: would only appeal to the B1G, back burner priority. Cap at 20 makes em locked in; 2 super-league would open up the possibility of a west coast B1G. Divisions return. We know from Ross’ most recent reporting that Stanford wanted the conference expansion cap nixed as well, along with other 4 acc schools I’ll address. Cal is a package deal at this point. Stanford recently hired one of the top Nike executives to run their athletic department.
UNC, UVA, GT: would fit in/heavily appeal to/be pursued by either conference; once again, i loathe UNC’s lack of shame considering their alumnus (ACC commish John Swofford) and his son are the ones that put together a 20 year contract with ESPN in 2016, 7 years after corruptly declining ESPN’s offer to create the ACC Network before the SEC Network, before SEC left CBS, and at the same time the B1G network was getting started. What UVA and GT would do once the musical chairs starts is unknown. UVA obviously has their own rival in conference already w/ VT, and GT’s main rival is in the SEC. Very important to remember that GT was formerly apart of the SEC.
Miami/FSU: two marquee brands that each lean towards a separate conference identity wise; B1G for Miami and SEC for FSU. They could fit in both of them, ofc. And be pursued by both. How this goes down isn’t predictable until we get closer to the end of decade.
Clemson: clean fit and would be wanted by the SEC. That seems to be their destiny if they leave.
Duke: would be loved in the B1G; however, no indications or reporting I have seen show any signs of dissatisfaction where they are. There’s also this whole private (WF/DUKE) vs public (NC State/UNC) thing that goes on with the founders of the conference. I hesitate to see them leaving. What would happen to the UNC-DUKE rivalry would be fascinating.
Louisville/SMU: SMU has more money, and Louisville has more athletic recognition. Could fit in either conference however much like cal / Stanford, would be a back burner priority. Don’t have the geographical proximity to the B1G, they have it w/ the SEC. Both seem happy to be in the ACC w/ no reports of them trying to setup another play. Louisville plays UK every year in football and basketball; one of the best rivalries in college athletics already in separate conferences. SMU has beef with the XII. Both are serious about athletics in ways unlike the schools i leave out here (VT is getting serious rn in football, basketball not so much)
Which conference UNC chooses, and what Louisville/SMU/UVA/GT does in response to that decision will shape whether or not the ACC stands or falls. And whether or not the ACC stands or falls goes into whether ND is forced to give up their independence, which they very much do not want to do.
Boston College, Syracuse, Wake Forest, NC State, Pittsburgh, VT:
ACC will backfill the exits of Miami/FSU w/ USF and UConn; Tulane/Miami (OH)/JMU/Memphis are all on deck for promotion if more bounce and the XII stays stagnant.
Ultimately don’t believe a cap (or this bill) will get passed and the B1G TV deal ends before the SEC one; so the B1G will make a move or choose to remain at 18 before the SEC does anything in response. So many mf moving parts
ND tried the non-football thing with the B1G and it was always a nonstarter which is why they did it with the ACC. The previous two B1G commissioners said ND will always be wanted and there were talks etc but they never went far & both believe ND will never join because of the NBC relationship. Alumni/donors love the independence etc; it’s part of their lore now.
The truth is both contracts would be negotiated to end if all these predicted moves are made.
