Protect College Sports Act [formerly “SCORE Act” thread]

Regulating how much athletes can make and how much employers can pay seems kinda like socialism

The catch there is the word “employer”. One of the purposes of this bill is to solidify the players status as amateur student/athletes and prevent them from being considered employees.

Maybe a dumb question, but why could ND survive as an independent but not Miami?

If Miami left the ACC, wouldn't a media platform love to have our rights? Couldn't we sell that for the 5 year probationary period and stay afloat.

ND can’t truly survive as an independent. Their football team can, but they need a clown show conference, like the ACC, to take in all their other sports for ND to be able to be “independent”.

ND gets away with their ACC deal because the ACC is desperately hoping it will lead to ND football joining as a member. UM would be unlikely to be able to survive the five years because the ACC is not going to let us leave in football while letting all the other sports remain in conference for five years.

House leaving before the senate even votes on it and not coming back until after the election

This is the House calendar for the rest of the year guys. They won’t be back in session until after the election. Not enough days on the calendar to pass everything else + this in the lame duck.

They players aren’t organized in any way, shape, or form though and one of the major purposes of this bill is to prevent that from ever happening. Every conference and university is adamantly against having to classify players as employees in any form, against allowing them to unionize, and against collective bargaining. It’s arguably the top concern for the universities and conferences.
I don'tknow answer to this...but can minors be part of a union?

How does it work in Hollyweird with the actors?

I have no idea, but how many players are minors? It can’t be that many. Most are 18 by they time they start college, and those who aren’t generally turn 18 not long after the season starts.

lol Speaker Johnson just sent the house home, all so Hegseth doesn't get impeached.

Unless the House rams it through during the lame-duck period, this bill isn't getting passed.

If you wanna go that route, I could easily point to the fact that there has never been anything close to the amounts of money "donated" (lobbying) to Congress since the Republican stacked Supreme Court passed citizens united with America's top crook in the oval office leading the way. Business and other interests can now give freely without cap to sway votes, so yeah, your sarcastic comment actually speaks truth. It hasn't always been like this. Not to this extent or anything close.

Correct....however....recruitment and commitment starts well before 18...

Does that have an impact??

I’m sure I’m missing something here but not seeing how this completely effs Miami even if we don’t ultimately move to the BIG or SEC. Unless I’m not understanding, the school is capped at $48.5M to pay its players but what is stopping the athletes from obtaining outside NIL from outside parties like they do now? As long as the school isn’t involved, why can’t Miami’s NIL program continue on as it currently does?
As a sports program Miami is rumored to be in the $60M range so the $48.5M cap hurts us.

Bigger issue is the blocking of conference moves.

This is a multi round prize fight. We are just through round 1. I would wait on the sky is falling hyperbole until it at least passes the senate in its final form. Any amendment to the conference cap makes 90% of the worries on here moot. And even if senate passes bill as is, the house is a completely different animal. Nothing is certain. This is why realignment has never been on a hard timeline. There will be more twist and turns before this is done. Trust in Joe E and the miami admin to do what needs to be done.

So can Saban and Magafee stop turning College Game Day into a political advertisement now?

All of y’all bragging about connections to the President need to get him to kill this thing. He can kill it fast.
You talking about trump? He is the biggest supporter and pushing this thing HARD, if it was up to him he would of already signed it into law
