Props to Coach D

Agreed. Props to coach D.

I saw a notably different defensive scheme tonight. Our corners played more press coverage tonight. Overall a lot more man coverage. Some very nicely disguised blitzes. Dorito finally made the adjustments we've been screaming for two years now.

I kinda felt:

1) Its fascinating what the threat of losing your job will do to motivate one.

2) Dorito did not fear Duke athletically. It was an easy game for him get aggressive with. I'd really like to see this game plan against VA Tech and FSU.

Lots of adjustments I was glad to see tonight. Lots of thoughts. I'm sure we'll get into it as the week progresses.

Here's how I felt before the game (earlier this week, on this board):

If I know what formations I'd use against our defense, I'm pretty confident David F'in Cutcliffe is going to know what formations max out his offensive players. Problem for Cutcliffe is that I just don't think Duke is very good. Their OL is not as collectively strong as Nebraska's. That's a key because we start everything with a locked-up fight against OL. Some of the Nebraska runs that went for 5-6 will be 2-3 on Saturday. It changes down and distance.

If you couldn't clearly see we finally made noticeable changes to what we've been doing on defense I don't think you understand football.

Its as simple as making tackles abd winning the turnover battle .... Only thing that was different

You must be joking. If you couldn't see with your own eyes that there was a big difference in what the defense was doing then just give it up already.

I dont care who you are if you dont make the tackle you wont win perryman looked like a ghot last week.... And secondly you **** sure arent going to win if you lose the turnover battle on the road....simple as that

This! But they don't hear you though

We stacked the box tonight, we didn't last week. It's harder to make tackles when you're outnumbered.

LMAO at the kindergarten grasp of D1-level defense. Yup, we just "stacked the box". Go watch the game again. The alignments weren't THAT much different. The difference was that we actually made tackles on the first attempt instead of the third attempt.

..Then it was this! Thank you finally we have ppl talking who knows!

No. We walked a safety down into the box a lot last night. That never happened against Nebraska. The lb were playing downhill last night, filling gaps, against Neb they were flat footed and sitting back. Corners were playing up instead of 35 yards off the ball, so they could come up and make tackles in the run game and short passing game. Overall, tackling looked better because we had defenders engaging the ball carrier at or near the line of scrimmage instead of 7 yards downfield. These are the same players, they didn't just learn how to tackle in the last week.

LULZ at all the peacocks reappearing strutting their stuff with all their smug comments like we just whipped fsu. Did you guys actually watch the game?

Did you see how bad Duke was and how Boone looked like he popped a bottle of Xanax before the game? The dude looked drugged like he was playing in slow motion. He throws like a Poo Warner QB.

Yes. We were better and clearly more aggressive, but Duke is really bad. Way worse than I thought. They hadn't played anyone all year so it was tough to judge them coming in. But Arkansas State would give them a great game.

Absolutely not letting Lucy pull the football away from me. Do it a few more times.

Maybe it'll quiet the doomers for a week.

Nope. But if he keeps it up til end of season then maybe. Can't wash off 3 years of crap with one light drizzle. But hey, NICE GAME COACH! Be the same coach EVERY DAY! I think that is one of Al's pillars.

Same scheme, but with a more aggressive game plan on D.

Still hybrid in the front (scheme) ... But a ton of nickle and a ton of single high puts more athletes on the field.

Disagree with you here. We dropped safeties all night vs Nebraska. We are still not an aggressive front though. Nebraska is just better. Their offensive line is a lot better and their rb is better. Their qb was a good runner. Where Duke got 2 yards Nebraska got 7. Thus where Duke is 3rd and 5 Nebraska was moving chains.

I'm telling you--when we play a good team the defense will look "passive" again and the fans will be all "FIRE DORITOS FOR REVERTING FROM THE DUKE GAMEPLAN." It'll be because better teams have better players, win 1:1 match ups instead of losing them, and stay ahead of the chains.

What I saw last night:

The DL was allowed to rush last night on 3rd downs, and with more than 3 defenders. They were allowed to pin their ears back and get the QB with 4+ rushers. I've seen this DL too often stand up at the snap and "contain" the QB as opposed to letting it rip and getting after it.

We were utilizing more nickel packages on passing downs. A relief seeing a CB over a slot WR on 3rd downs for once.

Predominately man coverage on passing downs with corners up in the line.

Much more one-gap by the DL, which is why they appeared faster and more dominant. Defenders attacked the holes instead of having to diagnose the play and react. Weren't responsible for 2 gaps, were allowed to fire off the ball.

Increased amount of blitzing.

All of this.

This was a false hope game. I don't think Duke is very good.

If they're finally willing to make adjustments to the scheme and approach, then I can get excited again. Let's see what the weeks ahead hold in store.

Exactly what happened. We appeared a little more aggressive, but it's easy to be aggressive against overmatched athletes when they're in 2nd and 8 instead of 2nd and 2 and their QB is zero that to run on those read option runs unlike Nebraska.

If duke was more committed to the run game with that electric freshman they would have been better off than letting Boone toss up those misguided blimps all night.

**** coach D. And if you think he's a good coach then **** you too. This game was an aberration. A statistical anomaly. He's terrible and that has been proven for four years.
