Program builders vs schematic coaches

If you have WSJ access this is a great article. Ole Miss's roster was gutted after the draft but because Kiffin is actually pretty good at coaching, Ole Miss fans don't have to wait 4 years for Kiffin to rebuild the the roster in order to be competitive in the SEC.

Dabo Kirby and Carroll were all first time college head coaches, Carroll had nfl experience but the other two had no HC experience. Plus Kirby was 8-4, that’s not bad for year one
Kirby regressed record wise from Richt’s final year.

Stoops was .500 his first season.

Smarts schedule was many times more difficult than Richts schedule in his final year at UGA. Richt faced two ranked teams, #11 UF and #13 Bama and lost both. Smart faced 5 ranked teams, #22 UNC, #8 Auburn, #23 Ole Miss, #11 Tennessee, and #14 UF. Smarts squad beat UNC to start the season and a top 10 Auburn late in the season. Richt also won squeakers against some considerably inferior teams like Georgia Southern. If doing an honest assessment, I'd say Smart got as much talent out of his roster as Richt did and it wasn't some epic demonstration of corching like we're seeing now with Cristobal and his Cristo-pals.

It’s pretty interesting how coaches with dynamic X’s and O’s seem to have instant turnarounds- USC, Tennessee, Mississippi, etc but program builders always have rough first years- Saban, Carroll, Kirby, Dabo, etc. I’m not sure what explains it but it seems that part of it is the increased physicality during practice takes awhile for players to adjust to.

We’re obviously seeing it this year.
Its not really difficult if your and ace as a coach you dont have to hit on 2 coaches example and ace offensive coach only needs to hire a great dc when you have nothing like mario you need to hit on both your oc and dc it usually takes more time

Also please stop comparing mario to these coaches he isnt eve in the same convo of some of these greats

Tennessee prolly should’ve won Atleast 9 last year, Purdue and then the Ole Miss game. That was after the previous admin left after going 3-7, half the roster transferred out, and potential sanctions looming. That was a **** of a job by Heupel to get them to 7 wins IMO. Atleast it’s exciting. So far the only wins we have are against Bethune Cookman and Southern Miss, and we didn’t even crush them either as we could’ve….. Can’t tell me that Miami is the only program in the nation with 40+ 4 star recruits and all of them are worse than the 1-2 star guys on MTSUs roster.

It’s frustrating as **** because while Lincoln Riley is running through his **** easy schedule and his team is actually utilizing the Talent they have, we are b**ching about 2-3 and hoping we can beat a ransacked VT team. Miami has shown it can recruit itself, we aren’t NEBRASKA who could stand to use a guy like Cristobal. We need an X and Os guy to take advantage of the litany of talent already here and the guys that will continue to come in. Not to mention, with Ruiz we actually are in the game as well, so a recruiter is now probably worth even LESS.

His greatest strength as a coach (that’s not recruiting) will also be his biggest downfall if he doesn’t take a step back and just focus on being a ceo. His fingerprints are all over every single offense he’s fielded as a hc because of his obsession with physicality and hard nose football

This. If we keep a similar style offense as last year we're screaming Mario Da Gawd right now.

Good solid discussion OP!

I would also like to know how Alonzo fits in to the picture. Not sure if it’s been talked about or not, but I would think he has been in on some of these meetings to know what needs to be fixed or what adjustments need to be made.

And lane actually does want to run the ball. But if it don’t work guess what? **** all that. Bring out the pass game. Bring even more tempo. He’s the anti Cristobal. I’m a Mario believer and he will fix this ship. But y’all were being down right insulting to lane kiffin last winter. He should have been considered. Mario isn’t in his realm of coaching. And with THIS roster? Give him 10 or give him death. That ole miss roster after that turnover over was ****,

Alonzo is going to be key. Living out west I see how Chip Kelly upgrades his roster with transfers that are somewhat under the radar. Besides Charbonet a lot of under the radar guys. You see all these undrafted free agents in the NFL making an impact. Hopefully Zo can find them.

He was 5-5 yr 1

U mean Richt faced the eventual Nat’l champions #13 Bama?? Lol.

Stop telling incomplete stories to fit ur agenda, my guy.

Richt faced the Nat’l Champions Alabama Crimson Tide, The SECE Champion Gators, and when it was all said & done, he faced 3 top 25 opponents:

1. Bama
22. Tenn
25. UF

Those “5” top 25 teams that Kirby faced?

#22 UNC finished 8-5 & out of the top 25
#23 Ole Miss went 5-7 & out of the top 25

The top 25 he actually faced were 3 as well:

14. UF (SECE Champs)
22. Tenn
24. Auburn

2015, UGA faced 5 teams that finished sub .500
2016, UGA faced 6 teams that finished sub .500

So Richt won a squeaker against GA Southern, huh? 2015 was it? In OT right? So u wanna highlight that squeaker against a 9-4 G5 program, but u want to ignore Smart winning by 2 against FCS AT HOME?

Stop the lies & the bias just to make a point. This is so far beneath u, but then again, maybe I’m the stupid one for giving u too much credit.

We get it; u’re:
#teamkiffin
#teamjurich
#sleaseballlife
#winatanycost

But u’ve been talking about ur *** this entire, **** season.

Kiffin's first year was 2020, the weird *** covid year where all kinds of crazy **** went down. i give basically everyone a pass for that season, even Manny.

Manny went 8-3 that yr & UNC 2020 still happened. No one gave Mario a pass for going 4-3 that yr. I’m not giving any passes, bruh. If that helps u, my Kappa brotha, then have at it.

It was Lane's first year at Ole Miss as opposed to Mario's 4th year at Oregon, but he should get a pass too. The UNC disaster was going to happen bc Manny's d scheme was trash, covid or not. There were other games prior to UNC 2020 that teams ran all over Manny's defense, that was just the record (which given what he did at Texas was totally expected).

A couple of things:

1. It was Mario’s 3rd yr at UO, but that’s minor

2. We’re comparing Kiffin’s 1st yr at Ole Miss vs. Mario’s 1st yr at Miami.

Fck 2020, here’s Kiffin’s record 1st yr, period, at the P5 level.

Tennessee: 7-6
USC: 8-5
Ole Miss: 5-5

Verdict? It takes 2 yrs, generally to right a program.

Why do “program builders” have to be ****** football coaches? Why can’t a guy recruit AND have an effective scheme? Especially when their employer is giving them a blank check for coordinators?

You don’t need to get worse to get better. That’s a garbage excuse.
