Mom used to say that swearing was a sign of low intelligence.
A common saying based on unsound reasoning built on a false premise. It relies on the incorrect assumption that a person who uses profanity either doesn't know or can't access non-profane words to appropriately express his or her thoughts, and thus must rely on profanity. It also ignores (or, at a minimum, severely discounts) the way the use of profanity can succinctly and effectively add emotional impact or emphasis to our words. This is borne out by fairly recent studies indicating a positive correlation between the use of profanity and an increased vocabulary. Even more interesting, there are studies that suggest using profanity can actually increase our pain tolerance. (See https://health.clevelandclinic.org/swearing-and-intelligence/).
So, basically, the saying is pure horse****.
I have developed a small add-on that allows users to elect to view censored words or not. By default the profanity filter is turned on and you will need to turn it off under preferences.
With this change we will be cracking down on users purposely altering words so that users who choose to keep the filter on see the swear word. To be clear, this is against the rules and you will be help accountable if you do so. This also does not change the policy against personal attacks so don't start.
Last, this isn't permission to use racists, anti-semitic, and homophobic slurs. Using these terms is still against the rules, regardless of your race, gender, religion, or any other identifying class.
Profane, but not “offensive”Gattis is another word that is profane and should be censored
