Pretty good read from BoydsBets (also posted on stateoftheu)

There might not be a hotter seat in college football than the one Al Golden is sitting in. Miami is 28-22 overall and 16-16 in ACC play entering his 5th season with the program. The Hurricanes lost four straight to finish 6-7 overall last year, including losing their bowl game against South Carolina. This marked just their third losing season in the last 35 years. Offense has never really been an issue, but defensively the Canes have struggled since Golden’s arrival.

We’re talking about a historic program here, one that sets the standard fairly high. You could point to a lengthy NCAA investigation that Golden had to push through, but recruiting has never really been an issue and Miami had seven players involved in the most recent NFL draft. With a feeling of the glory years slipping further away from the Miami faithful, the time is now for Golden to either produce or pack up.

Miami opens up the season with a scrimmage against Bethune-Cookman at home. The Hurricanes stay in Florida as they travel to FAU in week 2. Nebraska at home is on deck, the Cornhuskers won last years battle 41-31. A contest at Cincinnati will wrap up non-conference play for the Canes, and then conference play hits Miami right in the face with a road game at FSU, followed by two home games against Virginia Tech and Clemson. The first three teams that Miami opens their conference season against are projected to finish above their win totals. The Hurricanes face Duke on the road in week 8, followed by a home game against Virginia. UNC on the road is next, and this could be a pivotal game for both teams in the standings this late in the season if things are going well for the Canes. Miami earned the victory 47-20 at home last season. Things don’t get any easier as the Hurricanes wrap up their season with Georgia Tech and Pitt, two tough opponents that beat Miami last season.

Here’s an obvious statement about Miami last season, they essentially quit after the Florida State loss. The Canes lost to the Seminoles 26-30 at home as 2-point underdogs, not so bad considering how close the score fell to the number, bad if your one of the Miami players that only cares about the victory. The Florida State game last season was in week 10, and the Canes record heading into that contest was 5-4. What happens next is inexcusable as Miami lost their last three games, including their postseason loss. What makes it worse is they were favored in every game after the FSU loss, including losing to Pitt as double-digit favorites.

Roster Breakdown
You should probably get to know emerging quarterback Brad Kaaya’s name. As a true freshman last season he threw for 3,198 yards and 26 touchdowns. The 6’4″ 209 pound SoCal native earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors and set school records for a true freshmen in passing yards and touchdowns.

Running back Duke Johnson has departed for the NFL. Two talented running backs are slated to replace Johnson as sophomore Joseph Yearby and junior Gus Edwards will share carries. Yearby has a smaller frame then Edwards, but is crafty with his feet and can avoid defenders with sharp cuts, while Edwards is surprisingly fast for a 6’2″ 230 pound power runner.

The Hurricanes lost Phillip Dorsett, and that’s a huge blow to a rather average receiving core. The Canes will need Stacy Coley, who averaged only eight yards per catch last year, to find his form again. Coley averaged 17.9 yards per catch and had a freshman All-American season in 2013.

Miami lost their standout left tackle Ereck Flowers to the NFL as well. In fact, the only full-time returning starter on this line is Danny Isidora, the right guard. The rest of the starting line has a lot of youth but saw a decent amount of snaps last season.

The defense during the Golden age has been questionable the whole way through. The Canes finished 14th nationally in total defense last year, but that was all smoke-and-mirrors. In conference play, Miami allowed 4.9 yards per play while only collecting 15 sacks total. The Hurricanes’ main issues were obviously on third down and in red zone situations last year and with the loss of linebacker Denzel Perryman and defensive end Anthony Chickillo things might get worse before they get better.

The defensive line lacks depth and is inexperienced, and there is even less depth at the linebacker spot. Defensive end and pass rushing specialist Tyriq McCord has to move over to outside linebacker. The loss of linebacker Denzel Perryman and defensive linemen Anthony Chickillo and Olsen Pierre are obvious, but defensive ends Chad Thomas and Al-Quadin Muhammad are emerging as valuable assets. Junior linebacker Jermaine Grace finished second on the team last year in tackles and most of his minutes were with the second string.

The Hurricanes can be proud of the secondary, which should be a strength this season as junior cornerbacks Corn Elder and Artie Burns, along with senior safety Deon Bush, really seemed to gel last season. Bush alone forced five fumbles last year and Elder and Burns are ball-hawks.

Season Predictions
With average coaching and the lack of a winning mentality, Miami has proven that even with elite athletes you can still fall short of expectations. Whatever the case may be, there really is no excuse for the results Miami has put up in comparison to the level of talent that goes through the U.

I don’t see anything changing with a new player personnel this season. The departure of all that talent the Hurricanes sent to the NFL will be too much to overcome. This season has rebuilding year written all over it. Maybe with some patience by the Hurricanes’ AD in a couple years Golden might create something worth talking about. Most likely what will happen is Golden loses his job by the the end of the season.

This also isn’t the most favorable schedule for the Hurricanes. FSU, Duke, UNC and Pitt are the road games for Miami, and none of those are soft spots. The Canes also have to face Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech, all teams projected to finish well this year. I will lean toward their under, though 6-7 wins seems about right.

I asked a few other experts on Miami Football what they thought about the Hurricanes’ upcoming season. Here’s what they had to day.

Haven't beat FSU in forever: LOSS
Clemson gonna smoke us with that tempo.. Guarantee they score first poss: LOSS
GT brings back Thomas: LOSS
Fighting Londons: LOSS

Those are 4 guaranteed losses. This doesn't even include teams like Duke, UNC, and PITT- who we play all on the road. Duke has some very good talent and a good QB. UNC has Williams who can break a game any minute and they have a much better DC in Chizik. Pitt at the end of the season in the cold after a disaterus season is almost a guaranteed loss. Add to the fact that now they will have a stout defense.

The 2 pushes I see are really Nebraska and VT.

We we could potentially lose up to 9 games if we don't start out hot. Our season could be done after FSU.

I see us at 5-7 or 6-6. We get lucky: 7-6. ZERO CHANCE AT 8

Good read, thanks for posting. If it goes as projected Golden may not last the season and I don't have a problem with that.
