Prediction: REDSHIRTS ARE DEAD....

There will be more parity in CFB from the Portal--- absolutely stupid to stack blue chips into Bama, Clemson, TA&M and other programs where lot of potential NFL-capable kids get lost in the shuffle, get bored, get kicked out of school etc....

Yup, because the way it stands now, it's a monopoly.

5,525...that's the number of kids at P5 programs, no way in **** are all those kids P5 material.

I say reduce the max scholarships from 85 to 75-70, and now you have a bigger pool of talent for GO5 & FCS schools to recruit from.

I mean $h!t, if you're gonna be socialist, be allllllllll the way socialist.

Could affect schools like Bama more that stack 4-5 stars in the 3 deep, that and the portal. Of course, they’ll just probably have to increase their payroll budget to compensate, so who knows.

all true.

unless there is an injury, an elite prospect is not redshirting ...
at the very least, they will see four game action ….
if there's an injury, then you'll see redshirts ...
for OL and DL? you can expect the most redshirts as those kids need more physical development ....

but all that aside, bottom line is, if a kid can play, you play him because the world of college football has changed to a "3 year" cycle. No longer will good players, with rare exception, stay in your program for 5 years. they MAY stay in college 5 years, but at least one or two of those will be at a school other than the one they enrolled as a freshman.

you need to manage the roster like they do in major league baseball: expect a kid to be on the field for you for 2 years generally, and 3 years maximum. they either are so good they are jumping to the NFL after three years, OR, they are just "marginal" and they will leave you for somewhere else. the problem with that is, even the "average" kid can help your team. he contributes on the scout team, he's a character kid that helps the locker room, he plays on special teams or can give you snaps when there is an injury. depth and development are going to be challenges.

three other things: First, you need to continuously recruit kids on your own roster, not just the junior who is jumping to the NFL potentially, but the freshman or sophomore who is frustrated he's not getting burn. Second, it will change the high school bag game. How do you underwrite a kid's bag worth, when perhaps he bails after a year? you can't ask for the money back, and it's a risk to pay a kid like he's going to be with you for 3-4 years when the chances are he doesn't have to stay. Changes are coming there, I'm just not sure yet how it works out. Third and lastly, how does the ability of a kid to bail if he doesn't like what you sold him affect your credibility as a coaching staff and university? you BETTER be more up front with a kid because you can't hold him hostage anymore. you lie like a rug? it's going to rear it's ugly head in the portal, and kids and HS coaches and parents will notice. nothing speaks louder and clearer than a well functioning free market!

Idk if this is actually the end of the RS but the NCAA needs to remove the limit of players you can sign in 1 class or increase it. Teams gonna be losing more players and needing to fill up and not be able to do it

Ask Kelly Bryant if he thinks Redshirts are dead. Without the new redshirt rule, he would be ineligible to transfer having already started in 2018.

Teams are gonna be losing players because they have too many players...85 scholarships is too much.

The whole system needs to be blown up...as it is right now, the NCAA's just playing Whac-A-Mole.

With the Portal now creating a true "free agency" system-- there is ZERO REASON to ever redshirt players ever again. Also Tua and Lawrence blowing the lid off the belief that only "seasoned players" can start adds to this idea that Redshirting kids is OVER.

If you want any chance at keeping a kid in your program from leaving for the Portal, you better play him asap and at least in 4 games a year so that there is the issue the "1yr sit-out after transfer" is the only persuasion to keep a kid from bolting for the Portal easily.

The PORTAL has killed the REDSHIRT.

Manny will play every kid every chance he gets -- even if it means 1 play a game.

I'm not sure red, blue, or gray shirting are dead quite yet. Each will have it's place.

Transfer portal just another tool to manage rosters.

Most to lose: JUCO. Could be very hard to start D1, fall to JUCO, then return.

At the end of the day, there are still only 85 roster spots. Still 11 players on O and D. The portal didn’t change that. People make more of its role than they should. Transfers aren’t new. We found ourselves in a very rare situation, which was way too many empty spots on a roster, way too few upperclassmen, a coach who quit, and an anemic recruiting class at the time of his departure.

Kids transfering need places to transfer to. UM is attractive spot because of the holes mentioned above. Once a program is clicking, transfering into it may look less attractive to the kind of kids people are excited about.

A 320 lb 18 year old OL is way < a 320 lb 22 year old DL from a physical standpoint nearly every time. Redshirt them. Skilled players absolutely have a chance to contribute right away if talented enough. Play them.
Also as previously mentioned by others, if a kid is still recovering from injury/surgery great opportunity to redshirt them too

The only players that need Redshirts are the ones who aren't physically ready yet & kids recovering from serious injury in High school.

Otherwise, if you think you're going to recruit a bunch 4/5-star prospects & they're going to sit on the bench for 2-3 years you're sadly mistaken.

RB's, WR's, DB's, LB's & even QB's now are no longer redshirting. Typically, you want OL & DL to redshirt, but even more & more of those positions are playing as TF's if they're physically ready.

But it's something a lot of our fans are going to have to learn the hard way, the chances of us landing elite talent & not playing them are extremely slim. The fact is, our best bargaining chip on the recruiting trail is early playing time, the old days are over.
Think the portal changes the dynamic for most schools now including Bama

Depends on the school. At smaller schools, they will always have redshirts as these schools are usually only as good as their senior classes. They cant recruit the same talent as everyone else so they place a greater importance on developing the talent they get.

At the big schools, I'd agree, redshirting as we knew it is dead. I could see it used differently ala the kelly Bryant situation. You could see upperclassmen who have been passed on the depth chart leave teams mid season to save their eligibility. But with the 4 game rule, theres no benefit to sitting a player the entire year.

WRONG!!!!!
Injuries will occur and it gives the athlete the extra year versus a lost year.....Portal has nothing to do with that

your so wrong. first off rs is good for college players a lot of them id say 75 pct need the college weight room work. Oline especially. yes some play as true freshman but most play as rs fresh at best and a lot of th enm take 2-3 yrs to develop maybe we seen last of rs at qb/wr/rb but everywhere else it will stick. qbs seem to be the area where if don't play as true freshman could transfer most of all the positions.
