With the Portal now creating a true "free agency" system-- there is ZERO REASON to ever redshirt players ever again. Also Tua and Lawrence blowing the lid off the belief that only "seasoned players" can start adds to this idea that Redshirting kids is OVER.

If you want any chance at keeping a kid in your program from leaving for the Portal, you better play him asap and at least in 4 games a year so that there is the issue the "1yr sit-out after transfer" is the only persuasion to keep a kid from bolting for the Portal easily.

The PORTAL has killed the REDSHIRT.

Manny will play every kid every chance he gets -- even if it means 1 play a game.

Yes and no. I think it depends on the program the recruit attends and then the realistic aspect of who's in front of them as far as if there's a senior or junior who's leaving early.

Some kids won't leave do in part to having to sit a year iirc waivers aren't guaranteed just because you didn't play. The portal has more of an effect on older kids is say red shirt sophomores and up but you can never count out the divas

WTF are you talking about?!? The new redshirt rule did not change anything about transferring. It doesn't matter if you play zero games, one game, 4 games, 5 games, or 100,000 games, you sit out a year unless you're a grad transfer or you get a waiver. Period.

The boogeyman that will not die.

The only players that need Redshirts are the ones who aren't physically ready yet & kids recovering from serious injury in High school.

Otherwise, if you think you're going to recruit a bunch 4/5-star prospects & they're going to sit on the bench for 2-3 years you're sadly mistaken.

RB's, WR's, DB's, LB's & even QB's now are no longer redshirting. Typically, you want OL & DL to redshirt, but even more & more of those positions are playing as TF's if they're physically ready.

But it's something a lot of our fans are going to have to learn the hard way, the chances of us landing elite talent & not playing them are extremely slim. The fact is, our best bargaining chip on the recruiting trail is early playing time, the old days are over.

I agree there are some kids in some positions (QB,RB,WR) that may never get RS. Other positions need RS cause their not starting ready out of HS. Your always going to have developmental kids. Ones that need S&C, proper coaching, seasoning. The bottom of your roster will always be a place for RS. Stars are always going to play, and Portal. If a kid is a project here with potential why would someone take him in the portal,or transfer and have him sit (RS) a year.? “Free Agency” is a tool to balance your roster, and enhance good recruiting, and gives programs the flexibility and latitude to stack their rosters with RS.

Yes, any top shelf talent you bring in I wager at least 50-60% of them expect to play early and often

Helps keep balance across the landscape going forward... and helps teams like us when we lose kids to bags/a great crooter yet bounces back

Could affect schools like Bama more that stack 4-5 stars in the 3 deep, that and the portal. Of course, they’ll just probably have to increase their payroll budget to compensate, so who knows.

I don't see a good reason for holding a kid in a program where he doesn't want to be and you're not allowing him to participate.

Anyone that doesn’t think QBs will still redshirt is sadly mistaken. Yes there will be a few 1-2 a year that can contribute as true freshman. But the majority of even 4 star QBs will still redshirt in p5 conferences

There will be more parity in CFB from the Portal--- absolutely stupid to stack blue chips into Bama, Clemson, TA&M and other programs where lot of potential NFL-capable kids get lost in the shuffle, get bored, get kicked out of school etc....

Now they need to start allowing CFB to get a stipend to stop the total scam that Universities do to these kids who are 95% from poor homes. The lure of easy money blows out countless kids who are desperate to have a little spending money like all the other kids they see around them-- while the Universities make HUNDREDS of MILLIONS $ off them broke backs....

false, there are still a lot of positions that it is extremely rare to be physically developed enough to play as a true freshman and have the skill to be successful.

Tua and Lawrence played on teams that were complete, neither had to carry the load.
