Potential Portal LBs

My read of the tea leaves is that there just isn't anyone in the portal who will move the needle. If that continues to be the case, the smart move is ride with the talent you've got. I hope we find a proved Mike as much as anyone, but you can't just make a wish and click your heels together three times to make it happen. Bringing on "depth guys" who are not much better than our own backups is not a good use of resources IMO, plus they take away important development reps from recent HS recruits..
I agree, but i think it's what "moves the needle" to the coaches, vs what actually "moves the needle."

A few of the LBs in the portal were 100% upgrades over the guys on our team with serious experience.

Its possible they could play better this year in a new scheme. But I doubt it.

Coaches aren't going after the right guys out of highschool.

If you don't like the talent in the portal, entice the talent you like into the portal. That's the game.

Will be interesting if they ride with what they’ve got, because 4 years of HS and portaling under a master evaluator and developer like Mario should yield high expectations, right? There shouldn’t be this many holes heading into Y4…

Or will there be more excuses heading into Y5 when everyone else inevitably realizes the lack of (nationally speaking) top tier football players on this roster?

It’s enough In that LB room to be an average group. Pff ain’t the end all be all but through the first 8 weeks last year wes was one of 2 LBs they graded a 80+ in both run defense and pass. So he has shown he can play well. Popo had showed flashes before he got hurt. Would love a star there but just need them to be solid and not a liability

The Boise LB is on3 #1 in the portal right now .....can't believe Miami isn't pursuing him right now...current Lbs haven't shown ability to cover in open space during a game ...this could come back to bite the D like the S room last season....

Urlacker played four positions including Safety,TE & even return kicks beside playing Lb. Another guy that was Fast was Trev Albert’s of Nebraska. There others that have played Washington,Colorado,Oklahoma , USC Thru the years. Some were were Just Fast track Athletes playing football & were not good,

I love people who bring up LB covering skills…

Umm they play LB because they can’t cover or else they would be a safety.

Also in all seriousness….what the percentage of a LB locking down a RB in coverage? I would say less than 1%

Yall don’t think those Bama, Georgia and Ohio State LBs yall want have Darrell Green and Revis cover skills?

No they get cooked like every other LB in the world.

LB covering is an overblown aspect IMO. Can he read the gaps and the run game? Can he diagnosis the offense? That is the most important traits.
