Poff in Portal

Look, nothing personal, but you're full of **** on this issue. We were NEVER "about to trot this guy out as QB1". Just stop bull****ting.

Nobody disputes that Poff and Emory were already on the roster. But there was absolutely no "buzz" about Poff. We were taking a Portal QB to be the starter, no ifs, ands, or buts.

And we pursued several guys, which is why Poff left. He knew he would never be the QB1 at Miami, and maybe not even the QB2.

@TheOriginalCane I don't doubt you're right. But I distinctly remember looking at what remained in the portal at QB and fearing the worst. It felt like we were flipping a coin, heads you win with Cam, tails you lose with bottom of barrel Plan B. We had a couple more options this time before landing Beck. And if he does well, we'll be a de facto destination for top portal transfers. But that was not the case in 2024, IMHO. And I'm still not all-in on D$'s QB transfer portal strategy because it's too dependent upon available talent.

Yes, but playing high-stakes poker is very different from what that prior porster was trying to imply, that we took Poff and were "ready to trot him out as QB1".

During Ward's recruitment, we had an unusual factor (NFL draft) that was challenging from a timeline basis. With the loss of TVD, we couldn't afford to "wait" on taking a backup QB until we secured a starting QB. But that will never stop the logic-impaired CIS porsters from assuming that Poff was "QB1" if Ward fell through. More importantly, the "public" aspects of Ward's recruitment and decision-making process were very different from what was going on behind the scenes. And I can show you my texts with another CIS poster (who has a higher reaction score than mine) that indicate there were back-and-forth negotiations the entire time that nearly every other poster had given up hope because Ward had "declared for the draft".

And then once we had the chance to observe Poff for a year, we still knew he wasn't our QB1. We would have signed another two QBs this year if a certain someone(s) wasn't concerned about sitting behind Beck for a year.

So let's use a different example. The Gator had a "pre-season Heisman candidate" in Graham Schmutz going into 2024, plus a current "pre-season Heisman candidate" in DJ Neverplay. Yet both guys got hurt, and at one point The Gator was starting an Ivy-League-transfer-walk-on named Aidan Warner. Is he a QB1? Not by any stretch of the imagination. Do you have to line up SOMEONE behind the center? Yes.
