PODCAST: Hattiesburg Regional Preview: Canes face Alabama in Game 1 on Friday

Road RPI has me really nervous about 0-2 and a bbq

If Hugus goes tomorrow, Ciscar and DeRias are hittable and live on letting guys put the ball in play and keeping it on the ground. Ciscar has better swing and miss stuff, though. Its not out of the realm of possibility that an Ivy League team tees off on one of them and starts putting balls in the air and they go out. Recipe for disaster. Those same arms are the ones most likely to beat a team that lives on the long ball like Alabama, whereas they likely tee off on Hugus.

Hugus would dominate Columbia if we chose to go with Ciscar/DeRias game 1 for whatever reason (we won't, I know). He would likely shove against a Sun Belt team like Southern Miss too if we actually won game 1 and got that matchup.

I'd be curious of what actual analytics say as far as to who we should throw against Alabama, I'd put money on Ciscar as the actual best matchup. The analytics don't factor in age/experience and its unlikely we throw a true freshman game 1 of a regional on the road, so I get it. Still think its the best option even with that consideration but JD is old school and we're going to throw our "Ace" and Friday guy in game 1 on a Friday because that's what his boss has always done.
Glad JD listened to me.

Really like Hugus vs USM too. JB Middleton will be a tough matchup for us though. Tough draw

Do we need to win 2/3 in the regional to make the super regional? My baseball viewing this time of the year is solely based on the CWS in Omaha so I’m clueless as to what will get us to the next tourney especially if we lose a game in the regional. Any thoughts would be appreciated mate

Win tomorrow and advance to the regional final where you only have to win 1/2.

Lose tomorrow and have to win the losers bracket final and then win 2 in a row over winners bracket team.

Double elimination in regional and 3 game series in the supers (best 2 of 3)

I was with you I said in a thread earlier in the week throw some funk at them. They see Velo every weekend.

The pessimist in me thinks we lose a typical recent Hugus start tomorrow where he has just enough to keep you in it for like 4 where its like 3-2 and then a quick 3-4 runs and we are down 7-2 in the 5th and lose 9-6. Then we get the Bama lefty and come out super flat and Derias is wearing down to and we lose big.

Agreed. That is also my expectation for tomorrow. But I don’t know fully what to expect just with 10-11 days of rest for him. Having never came close to this amount of innings it may make no difference at all.

Won’t take long to find out. He’s looked labored early for many starts now

So far everything I’ve said on the pod has held true:

-Miami can jump on Quick early

-Early lead = canes win

- Alabama will only win with homers, too reliant

-Southern Miss is good but bats are cold

- Columbia simply hits the crap out of the ball
