Spring PODCAST: 2021 Spring Buzz - Week 2 ft. D$

Let me be clear: we don't know how good these guys really are until they're under real pressure. They aren't getting hit in practice.

But from a tools standpoint, TVD and Garcia both have exciting skillsets.
That's an incredibly important caveat. We've had multiple shorts and t-shirts warriors at QB over the years who couldn't make it work with the band playing and with 300 pounders wanting to eat their faces like a peckish Rudy Eugene.

Just to follow up on something @DMoney said, I posted during the Georgia / Cincy game everyone would be even more impressed with TS if they knew the actual weight he was playing at. People kept saying he was listed around 200 lol, but as I’ve said those roster numbers are bs. As D mentioned “he’s huge “. That’s why posted there’d been talk of him being used in a different role , not just an outside cb. He eventually turned that down and is dropping weight to be able to play at more realistic cb weight, and focus on one position.

I can say the kid walks around at a lot more than 200 pounds but has zero fat. He’s jacked and carries it naturally but he knows that playing outside with that weight is just too much. Tyrique at 200-210 is scary. A physical man cb that’ll bust a rb or te’s ***, just ask Don lol.

As for Tvd he’s played well but has been a little careless with int’s, mostly early on in camp. Sometimes he’ll stare guys down and force balls because his arm is so strong. He has the advantage over Jake in every physical trait but Jake might have a little more moxy and quicker with decisions. This will be a good battle going into fall.
Good stuff. But, as we know, QB is a lot less about physical attributes in gym shorts and more about processing speed and accuracy under duress.

History is full of less "talented" QBs who outplayed the guy with the howitzer who could make every throw under the sun in non-game situations. Garcia's got more than enough base arm skill to be a great college QB. Now it'll come down to what he can do under pressure, which changes everything.

TVD is playing well. The only reason I focused on Garcia is that he's making his move now after sitting out a week.

I would say Garcia is more fundamentally sound, but TVD is a better athlete. So their backgrounds bring different strengths.

@DMoney @Cribby - have you seen enough to be able to compare the release and overall quickness-of-motion between TVD and Garcia?

Those fractions of seconds can make the difference between hitting a tight window, and a pick six. I just don’t have any feel as to how the two guys compare to each other in terms of how long it takes them to set up and throw the ball.

You're that down on Kam huh? I haven't watched film on the kid or studied him, but you always have sound football related opinions. In your opinion will he contribute here?

I remember Ahmad Black being a good player for the gata. not NFL material, but a solid guy on their team.

My evaluation is that he's poor against the run/tackling and in 2020 he clearly lacked functional game speed in all aspects of the position. But he did look a lot faster the year prior, he's agile and apparently he's a student of the game even if his "IQ" has been overstated on here. There's a chance he can be a rotational deep safety if he regains the speed he showed as a Soph/Junior. I don't see him becoming a full-time starter because Miami asks a lot of their safeties to be interchangeable and execute a variety of assignments. I also can't see him being a quality special-teamer until he shows spatial awareness, tackling skills and overall physicality/effort that are notably absent on film.

Ahmad Black was a 1st-team AA doing the same type of stuff Kinchens did as a Jr...roving deep safety that lucked into some INTs and made some nice reads/breaks on others. Both had 9 INTs as Juniors ironically enough. Black had some good NFL moments as a deep safety in subpackages where he was a 3rd safety (Ronde Barber would bump down in man or underneath zone coverage). That's the role I could see KK maintaining if he regains the >4.68 speed he once showed. Gerod Holliman is another best-case comparison - average athlete, woeful tackler but tons of plays in deep zones.

Moxie like Aaron Rodgers or Johnny Manziel? lol

I don’t know if it makes much difference but TVD hasn’t played in a game in a year and a half. Whereas Garcia finished up his HS career just a few months ago. Obviously, TVD has been in our system over a year now with Garcia learning the playbook. Should be interesting to see how it plays out regardless.

It’s good that Garcia is performing well in camp thus far. It will keep the pressure on TVD to raise his game or get passed up. We need a solid backup whichever of the 2 win it out.

TVD played against North Carolina last December.

agreed. there haven't been 2 QB's on UM's roster with these kinds of skills since the 1980's

@DMoney Thanks for the thoughts. Garcia seemingly played higher level competition in high school than TVD. You think that's the distinction between them at this point in terms of each's development?

TVD is mentally more advanced. That's a big difference. (not to say garcia doesn't have a good football IQ).

But when you look at TVD's physical/athletic QB tool kit, and you look at his mental makeup, (the kid is very bright and very mature), I will say we haven't had a QB with that combo in a generation. Does that mean he's going to lead us to an undefeated season and be a first round draft choice? No. It does not. Long way to go from here to there. But it does mean the kid has the goods to make it happen.

If he continues to work, stays healthy, and has the right amount of luck, .... i like his chances.

saw TVD twice live as a senior before he came to UM.

he has a few mechanical things to clean up, but his arm and release are great. he's athletic, especially for his size, and he's more comfortable off platform than garcia. look at roman marciante's two evals of TVD. i agree with all of it.

Knighton is struggling because he's behind in the footwork and processing department running between the tackles. It's a big adjustment going from athletic HS back who likes bouncing to space vs refined and precise college runner. Some never learn the nuances of the position. There's a reason Frank Gore is/was still in the NFL while Anthony McFarland sucks.

Kaaya was very bright and mature

Just my gut feeling but I'm gonna say Garcia has a better career here. He played some real good comp in GA & excelled with excellent accuracy all while not having much time to settle in. Very impressive to me how he was able to win a state title & he probably didn't know all of his teammates names yet lol
