Photos of New Dorms

It’s gonna make me sound old, but these kids don’t know how good they have it. Although to me, sometimes the old Rat was heaven.
I was raised by Boomers and wholeheartedly disagree with you.

College doesnt even seem appealing these days.

We had it way better than these kids.

Remember cigarette machines?

Every day I’m thankful that I went to school pre-social media days.

But I wholeheartedly agree with @OriginalCanesCanesCanes about the old Rat. The new Rat is like a corporate cafeteria and has no soul.

Well, considering how many student-pedestrian accidents have occurred at that intersection, if they are putting housing there, I do hope they are further improving the walkability of that intersection. It’s been an issue for so many decades.

A pedestrian bridge was built several years ago (after many delays). Opened up in 2017.

Do you know what the plan is for the space along the canal?

So, the part closest to the practice fields is going to be a connecting piece to the new football building, i.e., you would not have to exit one building, take the existing outdoor bridge, and then re-enter another building on the opposite side of the canal.

From the plans I saw, I thought they were doing a covered walkway to the existing parking garage. The as-yet-unbuilt garage that will be adjacent to the new football building (in front of the Wellness Center) is more for the students who live in the new dorms. A lot of people work in old Hecht/new Hecht, and they will be able to park in the existing Ponce/Alhambra parking garage, since a lot of the stuff along San Amaro is metered.

And, again, if the plans have NOT changed, the weight room will be expanded but will still be towards the center of the IPF, looking out into the practice fields. Things always COULD change (remember the "water polo pool that we could change the depth of" that was supposed to be in the Wellness Center?), but I do not believe that they are moving the weight room to the canal side.

For...obvious reasons...

@TheOriginalCane I'm guessing they will use that space between the new field and the canal as a road for transporting materials when they begin renovation of the IPF.

But you have to admit, a new weight room overlooking the practice field in that space might look kind of cool.

No.

Perhaps you know about grass. But what you don't know about is the load-bearing capabilities of those canals.

We will not be driving heavy machinery along the edge of the canal. We will not be installing heavy flooring that can support heavy weight room equipment and heavy weight-lifters along the edge of the canal.

I guess what I thought was painfully obvious was not so obvious. So for that, I apologize.

But...no...we will not be extending the Metro along the edge of the canal. We will not be putting huge Greentree bleachers along the edge of the canal. We will not be constructing enclosures for elephants along the edge of the canal. If anything, we might need to strengthen the structural integrity of both sides of the canal, since there is now a lot more construction in that area than ever before.

The newly-expanded weight room will overlook the practice field. THE IPF PRACTICE FIELD. That is all.

I'll run circles around you when it comes to grass but you're on to something with the need to reinforce each side of the canal, especially if they're going to connect the new football building/parking garage with the IPF by a tunnel/bridge like the hurricane wind tunnel at Planet Ocean.

There have been crocodile sightings in the lake recently as you may have heard. It would be cool to have a croc mascot in the canal that's viewable to recruits on official visits.

Can we give recruits baby Gators to feed the Croc on visits?

The professionals at RSMAS eventually remove all gators and crocodiles from Lake Osceola. Saw them remove a manatee once too.
