I just got the 2026 Phil Steele Preview which I usually enjoy. 10 pages in and he has our offensive line at 39???? Enough reading for the day. You give me 5 true freshmen starters with Cristobal and Mirabal and they will be better than that listing.
 
Most of his rankings are based on returning starters if I'm not mistaken. Regardless if we think Mario/Mirabal are the greatest OL coaches in history, we're still replacing four starters (three draft picks).

Combined starts between our projected OL: 29 (108th in the country).

We'll more than likely be better than 39th but they'll have to prove it.

If Steele isn't as high on Cantwell as we are (and nobody really is) you have to have some reservations about out OL.

That said, 39 if borderline special needs ranking

Thats higher than I woulda thought, its a fair "show me" ranking.. We are replacing ALOT.. Anybody who isnt complete homer (which we all are) would have question mark and want to see something.. When the only starter returning was the lowest on totem pole from last year line and playing out of position with low pass blocking pff marks it is natural to have questions.. Need to see McCoy perform at new position, he had trouble pass blocking inside, now he will see more speed.
 
Good. Earn it on the field. I’d be shocked if we’re not a top 10 unit by the time we play Clemson. I personally expect us to be stout if not dominant come CFP. Mensah being mobile will help.
 
It's all based the amount of starts combined for the offensive line. Additionally, they factor in who has nfl buzz. THey don't factor in the coaches or the defensive line that this offensive line has to face.
 
if I remember right the Florida oline was ranked better than ours the last years we played… lol sureeeee
 
Outside of Pancake and McCoy, we have a bunch of unknowns and even with them, one is playing a new position this year(RT).
 
Phil Steele puts an incredible amount of significance on returning experience. It isTHE metric he uses to predict future results. By his methodology, UM probably ranks around #39 in experience.

Is he wrong tho? I have no clue but I assume our OL last year preseason on his list was rated very high lol did we trust it then?
 
I think that’s a fair, sober preseason ranking. They have a lot to prove. Now go prove him wrong

Returning starts has always been something I hear people point to for top olines, usually having near 100 starts or so.. I would imagine our oline is near the 100s in the nation if you look at returning starts overall, he gave us a huge boost based on that alone and it shows his respect for Mirabal and Mario..
