PFF grades for Virginia game

Excellent post. This is the kind of stuff most of us originally came here for until we realized how much we liked seeing our mostly stupid and sometimes impaired thoughts in print.

Run blocking is awful. Pass blocking IMO has only been tested by VT. Clemson will expose KC. Doesn't make him a bad guy Clemson exposes every bodies LT. IMO Homer is a major baller with nowhere to run. He finishes like an old school warrior. Even from my beery seats it was clear UVA was holding out DE's over and over again. Chad was really ****ed off about it. He rode the bike by himself the whole game. Malik Young was my favorite DB going into the season having a terrific Spring and fall practice sessions. He had to start but his magic hands technique after or during the catch has disappeared. He plays soft now not nearly as aggressive as he was earlier. maybe by coaches orders? Norton,Mac and Moten have all stepped it up I love them. LB's doing a good job. #4 is a superstar as well as MJ.

PFF gets an F for rating Homer that low. He must've had 20 broken tackles in that game. I recall 8 off the top of my head. He broke 4 tackles on the run he set us up for the go ahead FG. He had 2 on his 36 yard run in which he schooled the #1 and #2 tacklers in UVA history. He had another 2 on his 19 yard TD.

I get that pass and run blocking are different, but does anybody have a good theory as to why we suck so badly at run blocking? I don't know exactly how these grades are determined, but I'd be surprised if the OL weren't partially responsible of Homer's grade.

Strength at the point of attack

I find it hard to believe Homer was rated so low.

He didn't exactly have anywhere to run in the first half of the game; the blocking wasn't getting it done and he's a one-cut back anyway. When he actually had some holes he performed really well, especially at the end of the game when it mattered most.

Run blocking grades are telling. Didn’t even need to see those to know we suck across the board. What is everyone’s guess to disparity in pass pro to run blocking and why is that the only area on this team we haven’t seen any improvement since Richt got here?

Oh, is this what you "originally" came here for a whole two weeks ago?

Our short yardage run blocking struggles is mostly because of our center. Gauth need to get stronger and more explosive. He gets pushed back a lot on running plays when forced to block a DT. A good fullback to blast blitzing lbers would help a ton as well. Finally, a big physical tailback that can push the pile would be the icing on the cake. I do get curious though if we would tighten our splits in short yardage. Sometimes that helps stop penetration.

Homers vision was severely lacking on Saturday. He had some good holes that he just didn't see.

The TD he broke later in the game was finally when he opened his eyes and looked for the holes. HE showed patience. allowed it to develop and hit it.

He was missing some good holes. I agree with PFF grade. He could've put up over 150 on UVA

I will respectfully disagree with most all of these scores.

Especially on Donaldson and Gauthier. McIntosh was our best player.

You have a crush on me don't you? I am new to this site having come over from decades on Grassy and Through the Smoke more recently. Thank you for the welcome. I can give it out too. Hope your not a snowflake.

Teams are intentionally taking away the run game and making Malik beat them... so far, that hasn't worked!

The problem with our run game against UVA was poor execution on first downs. When teams stack the box against us on 1st downs, we don't have the personnel to go big and just beat them with numbers. Instead we tried to beat them with quick passes, but poorly thrown balls put is in 2nd and 10 far too often. 2nd and 10 is almost a guaranteed run down unless quick three and outs is your thing.

Basically, what I'm saying is that we suck at running the ball when they know we're going to run it. 3rd and short, goal line, 2nd and 10. These are all high probability running situations, and we just don't have the beef to pack it in tight and run right people when they know we're coming. We have a walk-on FB and a DE playing back-up TE.
