This was possibly the LOWEST we have been ranked in 30 years coming into a season.
There is a reason why pretty much everyone expected us to be at the bottom of the ACC this year.
This may be the youngest team UM has fielded in almost 30 years.
Today sucked b@lls. The defense is a disaster, and Im not sold on some of this staff.
But we all new this season was going to be brutal. Anyone who didnt was living in a fantasy world.
The reason we were slated to have a bad year, was because we are playing mostly 18 and 19 year old kids. We are almost WORSE off than we were in 97 and 98. Those teams at least had some seniors like Edgerrin James, Scott Covington, , upper classmen who who despite playing with a bunch of kids could provide some leadership.
People have given me a rash of sh*t for drawing some comparisons to the Syracuse 66-13 @ss raping we took in 98, but think about this.
Who in hindsight could imagine a team with Nate Webster, Dan Morgan, Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss, Edgerrin James, Joaquin Gonzalez, Ed Reed, Bubba Franks, Mike Rumph would get blown out and embarassed by Syracuse, in the worst loss in modern UM history. 66 points.
That was a team that had more future first round draft picks than possibly ANY college team in HISTORY.
And WHY did they get crushed? YOUTH.
Even a team loaded with all star talent, if the kids are only 18 and 19, they are at a HUGE disadvantage. They havent fully developed as players, their bodies arent fully developed. It doesnt matter if you have the GOAT talent, if they are all Frosh and Sophs, they are going to get POUNDED.
What we saw today was a VERY young team, who imploded, and quit at the end. EVERYTHING went wrong for us today. This team has ZERO upperclassmen making any contribution, and NO senior leadership at all.
Look, Im not saying this is going to grow into the 2000-2001 Canes. But we dont know what we have here. The only thing we DO know, is that this is one of the youngest rosters in Division I and possibly one of the youngest in UM's history. There is a lot of young talent on this team.
This will be a VERY different team in another year or two. We just have to keep our heads about us and be prepared to gut out what is going to be a brutal season. Talent or no talent, we are essentially fielding a JV squad out there against veteran teams. There is no sense in panicking and going off the deep end until these kids are another year older, and we can see IF and HOW they are developing. This team is being rebuilt from the ground up.
