Penalties

We had 2, yes TWO called against us the entire game! THAT is unheard of!
The discipline this Team displayed in that environment was one of the most telling aspects of how special this season is going to be.

And both of them were BULL****, particularly the second one. Mertz threw inaccurate uncatchable balls, and their WR flailed back towards the ball, initiating contact.

It was their most successful play.

Well, last night they had a boner for FSU against BC. Way to reap the benefits of a lawsuit…

Never say this but the refs actually did a good job. A lot of good no calls on incomplete deep balls.
except the missed chop clock on the td run by UF but yeah. It was also our players though too. James Williams would have had 3 late hits.
It's a different type of player on the roster now. Jaden Harris and Powell didnt play perfect but they are way more disciplined.

Combination of very disciplined play & a good officiating crew not trying to over-insert themselves.

Might have missed roughing call on Meesh INT but I'll take it lol

Oh yea I think I remember seeing on here the refs missed a chop block on that run.

Nah that wasn’t roughing close but a good no call.

I don't know that it was roughing. May have been hands to the face. If you go back and re-watch the play in slow-mo, the first hit does not look like it could have possibly caused the concussion. Mertz's facemask was slightly raked by hand contact of the second defender to hit him, but the real impact appears to be the helmet to the ground. Which is unfortunate, but nothing intentional, there was no "weight of the player" driving him into the ground.

I wouldn't have been mad at a penalty there, but I don't think it was a late hit or roughing the passer. Just two UM defenders hitting him almost simultaneously, with one hand from the second defender making minor contact with the facemask after the first defender's momentum pushed Mertz towards the second defender more quickly.

And, for the record, the ref was staring at the QB and the contact through the entire sequence. You can see him on video, he is NOT distracted in any way.

They also let us play. A few of those pass defenses last year might have been called PI and the hit on Mertz that knocked him out almost certainly would have been flagged.

I was thinking this entirely. At least for one game our secondary play, especially from the safeties, was so much more fundamentally sound than anytime in the past 2 years. But that's also coaching.

That's what I was alluding to. I believe it might have been. The other hit was just good football.

It's all good. Even though the contact to the facemask was unintentional, it's not an "intent" penalty, it's a "strict liability" penalty.

That's why I wouldn't have been mad if it had been called.
