Paul Johnson

Paul Johnson was not nearly as animated all season. He must have already made this decision, or knew it was coming.

Georgia Tech fans have unrealistic expectations against Georgia. Once the Bulldogs took it to another level the past couple of years, the gap exploded and no doubt led to this decision.

Very good run at Georgia Tech including an Orange Bowl victory over an SEC team quarterbacked by Dak Prescott.

Every time these teams abandon the triple option and expect better things, the outcome is normally in reverse. Some programs that have access to premier talent like Oklahoma, Alabama and Texas eventually found high ground but it took them a decade or more. Lesser programs that move away from the triple option generally remain in worse shape.

Hanging it up at GT.

From ESPN:

"Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, who played at Georgia Tech, is expected to be a top candidate to succeed Johnson, according to sources. Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, Alabama offensive line coach and former Tech player Brent Key and Army coach Jeff Monken, who also runs the triple option, could be in the mix as well."

Be interesting to see if GT actually wants to keep the Triple Option (i.e., wants Monken from Army)?

Id take the triple option over our current offense anyday, seriously if O was scored as much as GT this year we would be in a new years bowl game.

Georgia Tech is the ONLY major(P5) program that has run the flexbone in the last 20+ years. Nebraska never ran the wishbone, they were a power running team that depended on a strong I-Back. Their problem is more of an issue with getting elite talent to Lincoln, something that wasn't the case back when you could pitch "There are only 3 games on TV this week, and we are guaranteed to be one of them". Army, Navy and the Air Force HAVE to run the flexbone due to academy height and weight requirements. Everyone else that runs option based offenses are going with derivatives that utilize other elements, including the spread.

GT is not a bad job.

At all.

It a pretty awful gig. This fanbase whines about Miami merely having a sensible academic standard(IE, can a kid survive college coursework). Georgia Tech REQUIRES Calculus, regardless of major. Let that marinate. GT is also stuck in a state with a SEC power, that can recruit any which way they choose. Combine that with the rest of the SEC coming in and taking the leftovers, and GT is in an awful spot. They can be good at times, but it's almost impossible to maintain, especially if you have some academic casualties(Which is a certainty there).

if he was forced out then I'd think it's likely they move in another direction, however, that is not the case. Him leaving on his own accord (plus 11 years of coaching there) is a strong indicator that the admin is fine with the results and will likely stay the course.

Ken Whisenhunt is only a name thrown out to get ppl excited and make em think they reached out to a big name, but it 'll likely be another option coach. Doesn't matter if the boosters and fans aren't happy. They don't run the show over there.
