Patchan is a big key

I know this kid isn't discussed a ton, but to me he is a really big key of this team and it's absolutely imperative that not only he stays healthy and has an impactful year, but maybe even more importantly he need to prove he can play because he's going to be needed next year.

The way the depth chart looks right now, if Patchan is unplayable (not saying he is, just highlighting how important it is that he's not), that leaves Joe Jackson (NFL player 1000%, possible high draft pick with a great year, should be a great player) Demetrius Jackson coming off an injury (solid contributor/kid you can count on), Jon Garvin (showed flashes as a freshman, but is not yet a sure thing), and Rousseau (ridiculous spring but still light, young, and learning). That's a pretty good group, maybe, if Garvin takes the next step and everyone stays healthy. But Patchan would be such a huge piece if he can prove he can play at the level of someone like, say, Demetrius Jackson. That would take this unit from nervous to at worst, pretty solid.

But next year is even bigger. Jackson is a R-Sr and is done. And most likely Joe Jackson is gone to the draft. So that leaves Rousseau and Garvin. That's it. Unless Patchan proves he can play this year and stays next year for his R-Sr year.

Nobody is really talking about this kid, but he's done literally nothing here in 3 years (he looked GREAT in the FSU game in 2016, but got hurt again and can't stay healthy) and he's really going to be needed to play at least 50% of the snaps next year on the edge. That's scary.

I sure hope this kid is healthy and ready to ball. He's a huge piece of this team going forward.

Good post as I share your concerns about the depth on the DL particularly at DE going forward. Having said that, I must emphasise that if our 5 DEs stay healthy, they are a **** good group and will feast this year.

As far as Patchan is concerned, you are right on the money when you state what a huge key he will be this year. We all know that when Patchan is healthy, he is a quality DE. Unfortunately for him he has been plagued by injuries for his entire career here. He is 100% now and I expect him to be very productive for us this year. As a matter of fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that he will have a comeback player of the year type season.

We all know what Joe Jackson is all about and we also know that Garvin is ready to breakout this year. With a healthy Scott Patchan, a freakishly talented true freshman in Rousseau and the return of the most criminally underrated player on this squad Demitrius Jackson, this position group while admittedly a bit thin could be as good as last year's bunch.

His move to TE is what happens when you're operating so far below the scholarship limit you literally don't have a body to put at a position if there is an injury.

It wasn't dumb it was a indicator of how much work there is still left to do.

Didn't he already graduate this past week? At this rate, he will leave with a PhD.

Haha. Not a knock on the kid but I feel like he's been here so long that he may have been a Shannon recruit.

Patchan will be productive and part of DE rotation! I will project this group to have 20 plus sacks and 40 tackles behind line of scrimmage

Patchan, Rousseau and D Jackson give us good depth behind J Jackson and Garvin. I can see DJack moving to DT on passing downs, pairing with Bethel or Willis.

Need to add 3 DEs to our Class of ‘19.

I wouldn't be totally shocked if Patchan ends up the starter at SDE. I didn't see enough of him to totally justify this - even in the 2016 FSU game, it was really only a few splash plays - but he has the size and get-off to be productive.

He seems like a high motor guy that isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. I see him filling in Chad's role very nicely. He should be able to withstand double teams and help with the run defense. And if you don't double him, he can be disruptive collapsing the pocket and whatnot. His getoff is more Trent Harris than Chad Thomas.

In fact, Patchan is my pick to be this year's breakout player. I'm not saying all-ACC, but I think that, by the end of the year, he is a guy that we are all talking about in the off season about what an asset he will be next year.

Don't forget Bethel. Bethel will play a key role as a swing DT/SSDE. Kid is actually perfectly built for that role - 6'4 280. He will get starter minutes by rotating it at DT and DE when needed.

3T: Willis, Bethel, Martin, Silvera
1T: Ford, Odenigbo, Miller

SSDE: D Jackson, Garvin, Bethel
WDE: J Jackson, Patchan, Rousseau

Patchan has had real trouble adding weight. As a result, he’s too light to fill Chad’s role of setting the edge to stop the run.

So, I see him as a rotational player inserted to use his speed and quickness to pressure the QB. 10-15 plays per game.
