Pass rush

If those receivers wouldn’t have been high school wide open like they’ve been all season long we would’ve had a lot of sacks.
Philips didn’t have stellar first round sack numbers but he was all up in qb’s faces all season and every right tackle was getting opened and holding in for dear life..
But yet we were elite in allowing plays of 10-20 yards.
I didn't say sacks ... I said pressures. The DL had almost zero impact on the game other than the one play and playing reasonably solid run defense

PS: OKST threw 16x in a row to start the game and not once was anyone near the QB.

As the High Cleric of Mope DwinsMope would say ..... FAX

Outside of Harvey's strip sack, i recall very little pressure all night.

Even worse, i recall little pressure even when we blitzed an additional 2-3 guys. We have TERRIBLE spacing on blitzes, even worse timing/disguise. Guys run right into the same gaps and make it so easy for the OLine to block it's laughable. If you are blitzing LBs up the A gap, have a DTs flare wide to open up a lane. If you are blitzing from the outside, have the DE dip inside to make the tackle block down and open a lane for the LB. We have zero cohesion with what the Dline does vs the LB, just like we do in the run game.

We had chitty pass coverage b/c OKSU was making tea & crumpets while waiting for WRs to get open. He had all day to throw. Our Pass Rush looked real sus for 70% of that game.
That might be true. I feel like with the coverage we were playing, there was going to be a man opened regardless. But yeah, besides Harvey (not saying he was great), our line looked weak.

Need 2 portal DEs. Under no circumstance should guys like McCloud and Joyner be getting meaningful snaps at DE next year. But if the coaching staff remains the same, I expect McCloud to get a lot because he's a 6th year guy that Baker can "trust".
We need portal DE, LB, and CB.. What the **** has Diaz and crew been doing?! lol..

Agreed! My first call, if I am Manny, since defensive changes need to be made and continue recruiting well is to the Pitt D-line coach, Partridge, and need at minimum 1 DE transfer.

Our DE were pretty good but when QB can keep throwing three yard passes that go for 12 or more yards makes you look bad

i'm more concerned about our interior defensive line

their o line was moving those dudes back 5 yards at a time

At the end of the day, criticise the coaching staff all you want, but we played this game without potentially two first round pick DEs and a third round pick DE. Two of whom are eligible to come back next year.

Even Alabama would struggle to replace that talent or an end of season Bowl game.

We'll be fine come September. We recruit and develop the position well.

Pass rush and coverage go hand in hand. The front four hasn’t got consistent pressure all year. Especially from the inside.

Harvey showed flashes. Cam Williams needs to hit the weight room. Not sure why Chantz Williams didn't get any burn. McCloud and Joyner looked terrible.

Its just an unsound defense.
There isnt much rhyme or reason to some of the things they do honestly. Its a solid defense that feast on below avg offenses to avg offenses but can be had by any legit mind offensively. Im at the point where we need another legitimate ear to team with Manny to tweak some things. Im not crazy down on Baker as most since i know its Manny's defense. He calls it better..but schematically its his sh*t that has its flaws as weve seen previously at his UT stop.

They are afraid of the unknown. This is the thought process I imagine: "I know McCloud. I can trust McCloud to be a step too slow. But the younger guys... what if they do something wrong, like miss a tackle? Too big a risk, can't trust the younger guys yet."

That’s the major issue that I have with the defensive staff that Manny has created. There a bunch of yes men that only know what Manny has taught them. Also, he is not very good as a position coach. The two worst players on defense are the positions he coaches...
