Outsider perspective on UM search?

It's easy for us to get sucked into our Canes vortex. Most of us do see this whole hiring situation with our Orange & Green glasses on - and if you try to look at it objectively, you come across as a tool. Personally, the Cane in me loves the idea of Butch. If I think objectively, I think Herman might be the best choice. Whatever.

Butch, Herman, Strong, Chud, blah, blah, blah... There are Canes fans who can make a strong case for any of them, and understandably so.

However, over the last few weeks, I have talked about this hire with pretty much anyone willing to listen to me (as many of you probably have) - most of them NOT Miami fans who love the fact that we're limping along. I have found the consensus somewhat interesting...

They DO NOT WANT Miami to hire Butch. Even if there's a chance his best days have passed him by, they fear the fact that he has "figured out" UM and knows what makes it tick. They do not see him failing here, even if he doesn't recreate the 2001 team.

They DON'T CARE if UM hires Charlie Strong. Sure, he's got ties to South Florida, and would recruit well, but doesn't really intimidate them as a coach. Same seems to go for Cristobal. They're a little more concerned about the potential recruiting dynasty he could create down here, but are convinced that doesn't necessarily translate to the field.

They DON'T CARE about Pagano - they don't know too much about him and if he'd translate well to the college game again. Similar sentiments with Chud.

They DO SEEM CONCERNED about the possibility of Schiano. They think he would recruit well and certainly develop a hard-nosed, SEC style team.

They WOULD PREFER that UM hire Herman or Fuente. There is a higher probability that they might flounder at UM. They may not sync with South Florida. Sure, they've succeeded where they're at, but how many successful mid-major coaches have failed once they hit the big time. There is at least a greater chance this could happen with these two.

Again, this is the sentiment of other college football fans I have spoken to in a general sense. I understand their opinions mean nothing and affect UM's search in no way whatsoever. I just find it interesting to observe how fans of OTHER teams (and mainly, UM's rivals) feel about who Miami hires.

I know, cool post.

What have you heard?

One of the reasons why Miami should hire Butch. It's been a long time since other schools feared Miami. The program needs that to happen again.

I keep saying this even my boys that r fsu fans and florida they dont want butch cuz they know they wont gef first dibs no more for the croots. Butch hiring affects alot of schools

I have encounter the same thing.... people I talk to don't come out and say their scared to death of the prospect of Butch Davis coaching at UM again , they make every excuse of why fans need to stop living in the past!! No other coach that is brought up gets more vigor then BD. People can say what they want about Floyd "Money", but the guy is a winner and is the most hated boxer only because he*is ONE of the best at what he does!! BD in Miami was/is the best at what he does and that scares the **** out of people. People hate on things they don't have and what they know could be a threat!!

Interesting post. The thing I find generally irritating though when seeking outside perspective on our program is that it's really hard to find people that are intelligent and objective. Too often you either run into either those that buy the current national narrative that our run was a fluke/product of a bygone era and that we're all living in the past or the polar opposite that were tooooo influenced by the documentaries and believe we're just a coach that can recruit the "State of Miami" away from being permanently back. I guess it's all just a byproduct of still being a national brand that at least generates emotion or bias from people.

Here in NW Florida, right in the middle of Alabama/FSU country, everyone I know is a fan of one or the other, and we talk football - almost civilly, but sometimes not.

The one common thread from both Alabama fans and FSU fans is their extraordinarily negative reaction to Butch Davis coming back to UM.

They know. And it's something they don't want to see.

You need a man with know-how to navigate the cesspool that is South Florida high school football.

No one knows that landscape better than Butch. That's what this comes down to for me. And his presumed ability to bring in a high quality staff.

Schiano is such an ugly hire but for some reason I feel about along these lines.

Lmao no one fears Butch Davis. No one ever feared him as a coach.

I live in Jacksonville and all these Fsu and fl fans don't want butch back. He is not lying, they fear this.

Plus Donna didn't want to hire Butch. There is no better reason.

May well be, but they do fear the 20 first round picks he will have on the field by year 3 or 4. Especially since they realize that some of them would have been on their teams.

What Archer says. I live in Tallahassee. FSU fans will change the subject if Butch comes up. They literally blow my phone up texting me FSU 2013 NFL Stats to see if I'll agree to compare to Miami 2001. They are scared shirtless at the prospect of Butch. They actually grin about Fuente and Herman BC they know there's greater fail risk.

20 first round picks on the field? I havent heard anything this funny from a delusional cane fan in a long time. Apparently were gonna have more talent than any other team in the nation by far in as little as 3 years. Nice.

Butch is my number 1 choice Schaino is my number 2 and always has been. Either one of those guys would play an attacking style . i dont see either one of those taking their foot off fsu throat if we are winning by 21 either.
