Our run game vs FSU

Tell me you've never coached without telling me you've never coached.
You think telling the QB to not be afraid to pull it on a 4th and 1 in a crucial part of the game is "more dangerous" then asking him to throw it 40 times per game? We've done that the last 4 weeks with a bad OL.

/He also scrambles on his own.

I said designed runs. Pulling it on a zone read is different than running QB power.

Wildcat in short yardage. That way Rooster has a full view of any hole that opens up

They’ve expanded the run game quite a bit. More outside zone and fewer designed QB runs (obviously). They’re still poor in short yardage. There’s just no push, so any type of Inside run, regardless of formation or personnel, rarely works. You’ve got options but you also have to weigh personnel. You can’t rely on “heavy” formations because we don’t have blocking tight ends or even a fullback on the roster. So I think they need to do the opposite and really spread the field on short yardage. You can check to a run or pass call based on the defensive formation or even run an RPO. A slant when the middle of the field is vacated by run aggressive linebackers is an easier play than trying to force the ball up the guy against a defense that’s ready for it.
I even saw some counter trey last few games, I been losing my **** at amazement.. lol.. I love that ****, our guys dont seem to stick to their blocks long enough tho.. just pop but no lock.. If we can get that to work and add the restraint plays on edge, send guys in motion and hit them on some oklahoma type ****.. OOOOOWEEEEEEEEEE

We absolutely can go Heavy.

Options*
You can go unbalanced line
-You can bring in an offensive lineman...there isnt anything that says it has to be a blocking TE. In fact None of our TES can really block....so bring in the UNLV transfer in a heavy formation.
I think Michael Parrot kid is still on the roster as a FB. But Bring in Hodges/Brantley and slip them to the flat..right away. (ala Najeh Davenport)

My opinion there isnt a reason to go inside zone rpo.....Because LIKE last year....The QB isnt a threat to EVER keep it....so The edge guy typically is screaming off the edge unwarranted...to go along with the hogwash that is taken place in the interior as our guys get no push.

Im in agreement with you i would go spread in a formationin short yardage...see what you get with motions and force an adjustment more so by the defense. I mean they are teeing off with the clap crap for the hike of the ball as well.

You cant keep running a play where the qb isnt a threat at all and isnt accounted for in short yardage..either let that mfer keep it sometimes or shelve it in short yardage

VanDyke has kept on the read option a few times this year and usually with good results. He’s actually much better at making the read than King was. Lashlee doesn’t call it as much because I don’t think they’re interested in calling too many QB runs with nobody behind him on the bench.

Only if the defense gives you the look you want.

Not sure why but people, including football coaches, think you need to call the game differently in short yardage situations. I mean, you’re always trying to gain yardage whether it’s first and ten or fourth and one. Do what you do best regardless. Every team has a handful of bread and butter plays. Miami for example, is clearly a team that uses the passing game to open up the run game. We are not a power rushing offense, we’re a finesse offense that relies on space created by the passing game to open up room for the run. Why does Rhett Lashlee forget that in short yardage situations? Like all of the sudden, your o line that never gets push, is going to do it? Especially when the defense knows it’s coming?
But if you hurry up to the line and then run it up the middle, it might work!

lol. I mean in some cases, it might work. Just not often for us.

Honestly, I think D'Eriq King getting hurt might have been the best thing to happen to Rhett Lashlee. He's had to be a little bit more deliberate on offense and I think that's paid off with better play calling. I'm a Lashlee fan and I think he can scheme with the best of them but I honestly believe he was/is too wrapped up in going as fast as possible and it leads to lazy play calling at times. I get that you want to get to the line fast after a first down and catch the defense off guard but if you just call the same inside zone play every first down, especially if your line is below average, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Since TVD has taken over, they still operate at a fast pace but it's a bit more deliberate now. It's almost like instead of just running any play as fast as possible, Lashlee is taking a second more to make his calls and the offense is just much more functional.

They will continue to struggle in short yardage situations running the ball until they can prove they are willing to throw the ball in those situations. It won't take many TD passes to make teams back the **** off. Until then, good luck blocking 8-9 guys with 5-6 people.

yup, or do the same with Arroyo.

I'd also like them to implement some under center...so in the case he needs to do a sneak he can.
Like Desmond Ridder last week…I kid.
I don’t know TVD high school offence, but most kids have taken a handful of snaps under centre in their entire life.

Still, at his size a simple few handoffs a game under center...or a quick slant would be beneficial. Also an easy way to do a sneak.

what happened with Desmond Ridder?

edit: nevermind...fumbled the snap.

I was kidding. Unless we're playing a HS team, I wouldn't bet on success up the middle on 4th and short.

He actually played in a very pro-style offense in high school. He's taken snaps from center and is familiar with 3,5 and 7 step drops.

I've said it in a few other threads, but I think the lack of designed runs for TVD is a direct result of not having a backup QB.
That & the fact that’s not really his game.

People seem to forget that TVD said out of his own mouth that he sat down with Lashlee after the UVA game & they went over film & discussed in depth the exact type of plays he’s comfortable running, they reviewed all of the games together & he told Lashlee the plays he likes best, therefore that’s what Lash’s has been calling.

If he’s not calling for more designed runs, it’s because TVD doesn’t want to.

And what’s hilarious is seeing people be so hypercritical about designed QB runs, when most of the same fans criticized King for running too much lol.
