Really glad to see the OL and Rooster getting the run game going.

I’d give Lashlee a C- with his run game play calling tho. No doubt we will have some 3rd and short or Goaline situations vs FSU…. Does Lashlee finally get his head out of his @ss and call better plays than Rooster up A-gap out of the gun??? God **** he’s been killing me

They’ve expanded the run game quite a bit. More outside zone and fewer designed QB runs (obviously). They’re still poor in short yardage. There’s just no push, so any type of Inside run, regardless of formation or personnel, rarely works. You’ve got options but you also have to weigh personnel. You can’t rely on “heavy” formations because we don’t have blocking tight ends or even a fullback on the roster. So I think they need to do the opposite and really spread the field on short yardage. You can check to a run or pass call based on the defensive formation or even run an RPO. A slant when the middle of the field is vacated by run aggressive linebackers is an easier play than trying to force the ball up the gut against a defense that’s ready for it.

Short yardage futility says hi.

We haven't been good in short yardage in 15 years. It's not a Lashlee thing or Rooster thing. It's an S&C and OL recruiting/coaching thing.

However, as hard as it is to swallow, Lashlee needs to recognize this and just scrap it entirely. We're not good at it. Stop trying to force it. Spread the field and throw it on 3rd and 1 if you have to. Or get under center and run a QB sneak. Your QB is 6'5 and 240 pounds.

But what if it's 4th and 1? Run up the middle then right?

Only if the defense gives you the look you want.

Not sure why but people, including football coaches, think you need to call the game differently in short yardage situations. I mean, you’re always trying to gain yardage whether it’s first and ten or fourth and one. Do what you do best regardless. Every team has a handful of bread and butter plays. Miami for example, is clearly a team that uses the passing game to open up the run game. We are not a power rushing offense, we’re a finesse offense that relies on space created by the passing game to open up room for the run. Why does Rhett Lashlee forget that in short yardage situations? Like all of the sudden, your o line that never gets push, is going to do it? Especially when the defense knows it’s coming?

The little rollout play where the TE fakes like he’s blocking and just leaks out late has been a short yardage staple for us. Provided Mallory doesn’t fumble the ball backwards, of course.
yup, or do the same with Arroyo.

I'd also like them to implement some under center...so in the case he needs to do a sneak he can.

Hopefully if we have any 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 situations, we just throw deep bombs to the endzone. I think the success rate is about the same........

I just feel like we brain fart on 3rd and short for some reason. Our most impactful runs have been on the edges. Not saying you have to run a toss, but something off tackle or on the edge puts defenders in conflict and gives you a chance for a success, when you decide YES you need to run. Outside of a few goal line calls, dont rely on the middle.

I think the lack of designed runs for TVD is a direct result of not having a backup QB.
You play to win the game - Herm Edwards

You're risking possibly ending up 5-7 or 7-5. You can't coach around a kid possibly getting hurt. It's like fighting with a hand tied behind your back.

Tell me you've never coached without telling me you've never coached.
