Look at the play Ward made to Riley at the end of the VT game. FMs guy blew right past him (whiff). Love this guy, but if that was Bell he would've been crucified. I would classify that as a "hit'.
I agree completely and to be honest, I have a hard time imagining 5 teams with a better OL than us this year. We bring back Markel Bell at LT who was able to get a whole year of invaluable experience last season plus an entire offseason of S&C plus Spring football. At LG we return a healthy Matt McCoy who started 12 games while nursing a torn labrum in 2024. We also return Ryan Rodriguez who is healthy after winning the LG job in 2024 but getting hurt in game 1 and missing the rest of the season. At Center we have senior James Brockermeyer who was All BIG 12 Honorable Mention at TCU in 2024 after coming over from Alabama. At RG we have Senior Anez Cooper who started 13 games last year while dealing with a nagging injury. Cooper is healthy. At RT we have Junior and pre season All American Francis Mauigoa. In addition to Rodriguez, depth consists of lat Iformer 5 star Samson Okunlola a redshirt Sophomore, Tommy Kinsler, Juan Minaya, Nino Francavilla and true freshman SJ Alofaituli. I went to the trouble of writing out all of the above because I wanted to make a point about both what we have returning and what that 2024 OL was able to accomplish with the injuries they sustained. I truly believe this OL will be the best of Mario's tenure so far at Miami.I thought it’d be a good exercise to go back and revisit the success of the teams who PFF identified before last season as having the 10 best OL’s in the country. I’ve long screamed from the mountaintops that having a ****-kicking OL provides a very high floor for a football team. I’m sure PFF has us top 10 in these rankings again this year, so how’d these teams do last year??
1. Alabama 9-3 — 18th in the country in yards per play
2. UGA 10-2 — SEC champs, 51st in YPP
3. LSU 8-4 — 33rd in YPP
4. Texas 11-1 — SEC runner-up, made the national semifinal, 27th in YPP
5. Oregon 12-0 — Big 10 champions, 12th in YPP
6. Ohio State 10-2 — National champions, 3rd in YPP
7. Missouri 9-3 — 85th in YPP
8. Miami 10-2 — Best offense in the country and school history
9. FSU LOL
10. Gata 7-5 — 45th in YPP
So, even including FSU’s 2-10 complete abomination, these 10 teams went 88-32 in the regular season. The national champion, the SEC champion, and the B1G champion all in the top 6 of this list.
It’s hard to be bad when you have a very good offensive line. It truly is. We all know PFF’s grades can be taken with a decently sized grain of salt, but for the most part, these were pretty predictive. I just cannot imagine 10 teams in America will have a better OL than us this year. Go ride that to a double-digit win season again, por favor.
Using played through injury to strengthen the argument is certainly one way to do it. What about impact made or post season recognition?I agree completely and to be honest, I have a hard time imagining 5 teams with a better OL than us this year. Cooper needs to be much improved.Impact made is we return 3 starters (and maybe half a starter in Bell?) who made up one of the best offensive lines in the country last year.
Injuries aside, what’s the absolute floor for this line? At worst, Mauigoa and Cooper have to be equal to better than they were last year. Same with McCoy. These kids aren’t going to be worse. I guess somehow Bell doesn’t improve at all and is an OK left tackle, and Brockermeyer is a downgrade from Carpenter? That’s the literal worst case run-out? And even if so, are those kids even remotely likely to be below-average? You’d have a hard time convincing me of that.
So the most-likely scenario is the line is at least as good as last year if you assume the right side just has moderate natural progression and the middle/left is slightly worse? And there’s a very good chance it’s even better, as what if Coop and Cici take sizeable jumps, Bell plays like a legit NFL LT (which is definitely in his range of outcomes) and Brockermeyer is just equal to Carpenter?
I’d bet a lot of money this is at least a Top 10 OL in America. And if that’s true, barring some mental Chernobyl by Beck and/or every single WR being a complete ****stick, the offense will be really good again. Not #1 in America good, but in the Top 10-15% in the country.
Cooper needs to be much improved.
Bell needs to be much improved.
McCoy needs to be very much improved.
I disagree with your assessment. In order for us to have a top 10 line significant improvement will be required. For what? To have the same line as last year, which any impartial observer would tell you was one of the very best in America?
If all of those kids need to be “much improved” and they all played in the majority of our games last year, then last year’s line must have blown ape ****. I was obviously in an alternate universe all year because the one I watched was ******* phenomenal.
I disagree with your assessment.
McCoy was good last year. What are you talking about here? I question your ability to recognize quality offensive line play, if that’s what you think of McCoy.Cooper needs to be much improved.
Bell needs to be very much improved.
McCoy needs to be very, very much improved.
