got this from shodell at canesport, i appreciate him as he shoots it straight ... he makes some great points in regards to our defense vs upcoming offenses ... not to mention most think our offense will take a step forward under mensah

We had the two best de’s in America that were complete players. Imo the pass rush will drop off ( duh) but the setting the edge by the de’s is more of my concern. The Interior should be better so maybe those guys take some pressure off with the run d.

I expect DB, interior DL, and LB will be better in 2026. So the one position that might take a slight step back is DE, but when 3 of the 4 position groups on defense will be deeper and more experienced next season, I don't quite see how that adds up to the defense overall taking a step back.

Our edges wrecked the entire gameplan of opponents which made things much easier in back 7. Then you had a game changer at nickel. Db’s and lb’s tend to look worse when they’re in coverage longer. Do I expect a big drop off ? Nah , but if I had concerns it would be edge.

Outside of Carr being better with experience I don’t think ND offense is better overall enough to worry beyond regular respect of them being above average

I expect zero drop off. We may be better.

Even with the drop-off from Bain and Mesidor, the marginal impact on defensive production will be mitigated by 4 top 50 player level (across all positions) DEs in Wilson, Blount, Lightfoot and Lowe not to mention Scroggins and Pickett.

Meanwhile our DT starters will both have another year of development and are supported by two great transfer adds, our LBs and CBs are returning and we’re in year two of Hetherman’s system. Thorton fills Scott’s shoes and what we lose in aggression from Thomas we gain in turnover threat in Fitzgerald.

Favorable schedule, too. I think we’ll the gelling by the time Clemson rolls around and much more so by the time we play the Domers. Playoff run here we come.

dline normally makes the secondary look better, not vice a verse ... but shodell has a point, whose offense is really like that on our schedule
 
I don’t expect a drop off I think Wilson is a really good pass rusher a first round pick. Maybe the stats will be a tad down but I think we will still be very good on defense

bs? it's a valid argument imo ... defense will take a step back, but so to are the offenses we face

The schedule is why the drop off isn’t as big of a deal to me. When we do step up in competition is when it’ll be more of an issue. No DE is what those guys were. They blew up the run game and pass. Always affecting the game even if stats didn’t show it.

I could see a guy or two with more total sacks but having nowhere near the impact on offenses if that makes sense. Watching Missouri games Wilson would disappear for long periods then would make a splash play.

I’ve seen both… a DL thats whoopin an OL play after play will definitely speed up a QB’s clock but I’ve also seen DBs because of tight coverage make a QB hold the ball a tick or two longer and that’s exactly where the term “coverage sack” comes in.

When an OL is good and a DL is good that DB/DL relationship becomes a lot more synergistic.
