Our defense need to play like 15 men are on the field

Like they did versus ND. Rabid animals, intimidating, relentless and blasting through the line...the team began to believe they were great and the chain went national and that's why they lost...its their spirit and fight that makes them great...they need to fight as if there's no tomorrow against Clemson and they will dominate..if they don't they lose...
Which team will we see next week...

The turnover chain and the excitement of the turnovers has masked a very mediocre defense all year, particularly on third down. 58th in the nation on defensive 3rd down stops. Thats pretty terrible.

Clemson is 9th in the nation on offense 3rd down conversions.

I understand Coach Diaz philosophy that yards dont matter (we give up lots of yards), and that what matters is yards per play (which we are very highly ranked in). The problem is if you dont get off on third down, then it doest matter how nice your yards per play average is.

You do realize that Miami's also first (prior to the Pitt game) in categories like sacks and TFL?

Watching Clemson against South Carolina right now is very concerning. They're absolutely abusing the crap out of them.

We better not have our QB come out complacent again like he did against Pitt.

Offense has to help the defense out and not go 3 and out. IMO that will be the turning point of the game. As well as converting on 3rd down.

Yep. Clemson has too much skill for us to think we are going to contain them (hope I'm wrong)
This game will come down to our ability to move the ball consistently and score on Clemson.

our offense needs to keep our defense off the field

The defense by nature of a terrible 3rd down against could help itself there.

Sacks and TFL are awesome— but meaningless if you give up a third down completion in the series which we do way way way too much.

They're a tough matchup for sure. You have to play them straight up as they're one of just a handful of teams that can basically beat you with every single position player they have.

Malek Young scares the **** out of me this game if I am being honest. Bandy I feel is the better matchup with Renfrow. Delaney I would put on Tee and Jackson on Cain. Let the old dog Delaney try some senior tricks at the line. May have to switch Jackson over.

Their running backs are a threat every time they touch the ball. Etienne, fastest back we have faced all year. Then the QB can hurt you as well.

Tough, but the DL has and can do it. This game is a DL scouts wet dream. Jaquan needs another game of the week. Redwine is hopefully healthy and the LB'ere need to get off blocks, maintain lanes, and not overpursue.

As someone said, we have to move the chains offensively.

What?

The defense was allowing 5.4 yards per pass attempt until two weeks ago. That was outstanding, and T4 in the nation. Now we've dropped to 6.1 and T13 (including with Clemson), largely due to the Virginia game but also some contribution from the Pittsburgh game.

I have to say this magnitude of late decline is very, very rare. Once teams are established in the top tier late in the season they seldom free fall. Pass defense is my pet category. The national champion is almost always within the Top 10 in YPA allowed. That's why I was quietly thrilled with the Canes even though I hate the RPO and the roster overall is not ready. But at least we were prioritizing and executing the correct aspect of the game. No way we overcome our other deficiencies if the pass defense hadn't been so stalwart.

You'll note the top guns of the sport atop that category. Nobody should want Alabama to sneak in. They lead the nation, which is often the case. Auburn has been high all season, unlike the 2010 team which allowed 7.0 YPA and is the one great exception in the decades I have followed this stat. Cam Newton overcame all. Jim Harbaugh has to be going nuts because his pass defense is great again, after leading the country last year, but other areas of the team have fallen well shy.

Florida State is easily the most underrated team in the country. It's been glaring all year. They don't have far to go to regain top status. The pass defense is actually very good at 6.0, and vastly improved over the 7.1 from last season.

Note: Some of the numbers I quoted from that link may change somewhat after tonight's results are included

We also dropped to 14th in yards per play.

Every other CFP contender is above us in this stat Diaz considers tops.

We played very few weaker qbs - va tech and nd qbs were awful and on the road - out dbs worry me
