OT: why does FIU have a football program?

I'm not saying all mid major programs don't deserve to field a team. Some of them have done well and have moved up to power 5 conferences, but those programs we're regularly supported by alumi, students and locals. FIU stadium is a ghost town during games and they seem to be losing a lot of money. It doesn't seem like it will be getting better any time soon. So why would a school put themselves through that sort of financial stress and embarrassment.

Btw, sorry for posting about FIU on the canes board. But just like their team, their message board is dead too.

We don't need FIU for that. We did that when we hired Golden.

Golden didn't do anything to this program that wasn't already done. The UM administration, who decided to go cheap when they hired Coker, Shannon, and Golden stained the program.

The only good thing FIU's football program is providing is their football field to High School football teams that want to rent out the stadium and for the Belen vs. Columbus football game.

That doesn't benefit the school tho. I mean, financially they have to be losing a ton of money.

Any school that has a football program it is for marketing purposes. Nobody outside of Miami had ever heard of FIU before they had a football program.
