OT: What makes a rival?

As for why UF has 4 more hated rivals, look at their history. They have been shut out of conference and national championships by others on their schedule since removing us 30 years ago. Not hard to see why.

Miami has a hatred of FSU because of consistent history, geography AND costing each other National Title appearances.

ND also was a storied program when we regularly played during our rivalry. There is much history.

When did FSU cost us a title shot? I'm drawing a blank on that one.

No. That was a freaking mess, but it was a mess the NCAA allowed to happen with a screwed up system. They have never beaten us on the field to cost us a title shot. 89 they beat us but we still won the title. Other than that....
 
To answer the question in the title thread, I can do it in one word.

Hatred.

I believe hatred is what makes a rival. Think about all the great rivalries in sports, those teams absolutely HATE each other, you revel in their misery, and hate when they succeed. Any team that I hate, I consider a rival, because they have done a lot to earn that hatred. I believe most of you could say the same about your lists
 
I think what makes a rivalry is when both teams are at there peaks for a few years and those games decide titles, though I dont mind and prefer to destroy a beat *** fsu program
 
Rivalry does not consistent of hate. Hate is when a team tries to embarrass you like the gator has done to us. FSU is a rival but not hated as they have never backed down from playing us like the gator. Hating Ohio State is legit not because they beat us (that was a biased official) but the way they took out McGahee and celebrated his injury.
 
I can tell you what not makes a rival. Fu***** ACC trying to make Pitt our rival by constantly scheduling us as the last game of the year (not this year finally hah). What a fail attempt by them.

Vt based solely on that Turkey noise they play over and over again.
Gt because they used to injure players with low blocks....
