OT: UFC 242 Khabib vs Poirier

At this very moment, pound for pound I think Khabib is the best on the ground. It’s unorthodox, not exactly “ wrestling “ or fundamental but it’s the deadliest **** I’ve seen in a minute.

I think Cormier and Askren have better wrestling. jacare 100% has better grappling. He is certainly deadlier though P4P on the ground. BJJ is not ideal for MMA because of the short rounds.

Don’t get Yoels wrestling confused with khabibs wrestling. They’re both very good at what they do, but when applied to mma, khabib shines.

Yoel is a Freestyle guy. Freestyle barely spends any time on the ground and ground control is not very important in FS because you just need to rotate the guy. Freestyle ground game is barely applicable to MMA. However, his TDs and TD defense are elite.

That’s why I don’t use “wrestling” , it’s more his ground game as a whole. I think it’s called sambo, whatever that **** is, he’s the deadliest I’ve seen on the ground.

Yup, Ground game is the correct term. He did wrestling and he also did Sambo, which was what Fedor did. There are like 3 types of Sambo. One is basically MMA, but with slightly tighter rules, one is similar to the Marine corp martial art, but they concentrate mainly on Leg locks(kind of like Judo with the arm locks), and one is similar to BJJ, but with an emphasis on leg locks.

Ben Askren 100% is one of the best pure wrestlers in the world.

In a freestyle wrestling match I'm taking Askren, but in a MMA fight it would be comical watching Askren trying to escape Khabib lol.

But I agree with your point, I think people don't understand what you're saying. Khabib is a great grappler though, but his strength is the overall style as it pertains to MMA, in just pure grappling/wrestling there's others that are better than him.

Jordan Burroughs is arguably one of the greatest wrestlers of All-time, in a catch/freestyle wrestling match he beats Khabib all day.

I agree with you. My biggest knock on yoels game is that he doesn’t use his wrestling offensively. If he used his requisite skill set appropriately he would be champ.

Yup, also genetics/strength/speed all play a huge part in this and Khabib is just a genetic freak. Khabib is just that much more athletic, strong, tougher, aggresive, than these other guys that it doesn't matter that they may be better at certain things. You could be the most technical boxer in the world and get stomped by a guy with a granite chin and heavy fists who is much less technically skilled. Same goes for the ground game. People buy to much into the Gracie mentality of "skill trumps talent no matter what". Skill trumps talent when one guy has absolutely no idea what they are doing, but I am going to take a freak athlete brown belt over a librarian type black belt any day. Even though the black belt is the "better" grappler.

Burroughs would smoke him in Freestyle or folk style, but honestly, in Catch Wrestling I would have to go with Khabib because Burroughs doesn't know how to defend submissions.

The problem with Freestyle is by it self it is almost useless in MMA. The mat is too soft you really be able to consistently slam people unconscious, which is freestyles best skill. Yoel in a street fight would murder 99% of the division with a slam onto concrete.

However, folk style is the style that allows you to dominate on the ground so when he gets guys to the ground he really can't do much since freestyle ground game is almost useless.

He needs to either develop some BJJ or other grappling or become a good striker so he can keep it standing and be able to just bang with guys.

Wahoo McDaniel or The Great Kabuki would beat Khabib in a wrestling match. I’ll put money on that.

Kabuki would spit “Asian Mist” in Kabibs eyes to blind and induce intense stinging in his eyes, which would allow him to defeat him.

And Wahoo McDaniel would hit him with his powerful chop to disorient him and render him defenseless.

I do too. I love Ferguson he's a great fighter & is probably the only one in 155 that can give Khabibi a real challenge.

I can't wait for the Khabib vs Ferguson fight, but Tony ain't beating him, he has no answer for Khabib's ground game, there's nothing he can do with him.

Ferguson won’t be helpless on the ground like these other cats. Ferguson is a beast fighting off his back and could easily catch Khabib with his legendary elbows. Not to mention he’s a threat to submit Khabib off his back like no one else Khabib has faced in the UFC. To me this is he most stylistically intriguing matchup in all of the UFC and I for one can’t wait for it.
