OT: True Detective season 3

Big fan of the True Detective series, I actually liked Season 2 more than most, but nothing tops Season 1.

Really like Season 3 thus far, I believe the Priest, Attorney General & the Hoyt Food owner are all involved on the murder of the boy & attempted kidnapping the girl. Her mom was prostituted out to them & her husband probably isn't Julie's father IMO.

Good assessment! I agree that the first two are in the running, but I would be surprised that "Hoyt Foodowner" is in it at the end. However, he may be a whistle blower that would lead to the discovery of the guilty party or parties.

I forgot about the priest. Yes I think he might be involved in someway. But I think the two principals are the attorney general and Hoyt (Tyson foods lol) guy. Wanted the girl as part of their family, something happened with the brother when they were getting her.

Season 1 was insanely good. I didn’t hate season two like some people, so I agree with you there. It wasn’t bad - it was just different. Better than 99% of the trash on television. Follow ups are always hard, when the first one is so good.

Supposedly this season takes place in the same “universe“ as season one. There was a mention of a season one event in one of the episodes, where you saw a headline of something that happened in season one.

Yeah Season 2 was trying a little too hard to be outside of the box, they changed the formula & it both worked and didn't work at times. The plot was almost too deep, they kept spinning everything every other episode, you had no grasp of what was happening until the Season finale, then the way it ended was a let down, but it was still a good season imo.

Season 3 is definitely a revival of the Season 1 style & it does take place within the same timeline. There may even be a link from the Carcosa ring in Lousiana to what went on down in Arkansas. Those same dolls from this season were similar to Season 1.

And yeah that priest just seems like a creepy mf'er, as soon as he came into the picture, I was like nah this dude is guilty... Idk of what, but he had something to do with it lol.
 
I loved season 1--A true work of art.

I liked season 2 and appreciated the departure from what season 1 did but there was a questionable casting decision or two.

Season 3 I've seen 3 episodes and I feel like they're trying way too hard to be like season 1. The style of storytelling is interesting, but I'm usually unimpressed with Mahershala Ali's performances and no other actor stood out thus far.

I agree, sometimes pressing the envelope too hard. Ep 4/5 imo Ali’s partner has been impressive.

We’re on the same page. Now watch it be something completely different in the end, you know a little misdirection. I’ll be shocked, though. This theory just makes too much sense. I just don’t see how the DA isn’t involved, and that priest had a goofy fūcking pedo stare

Ali is killing it. He’s eating that part up. Just don’t see what you’re saying.
 
I've missed the last two episodes and will probably miss tonights episode. Enjoyed it so far.

I agree on the husband not being the true dad....but my theory hasn't been mentioned in this thread so I'll throw it out there.

I've thought from the first episode there is something "off" about Ali's wife, Amelia. The show has conveniently narrated in a "blank spot" in Ali's memory around the time that **** went sideways. In last night's episode his former partner kept bringing up "the stuff they did" and specifically "the thing he did" and simply apologized and said he couldn't remember.

He covered up something his wife did and buried the secret so far it led to the onset of his dementia. That's my best guess.
 
Haven't started it yet... Hopefully they solve the mystery of how season 1 was so great and season 2 was so terrible

He seems like several people I know. So it’s a “real“ performance, to me anyway. In fact, I think it’s an understated performance, with the exception of when he’s older, but when he’s older he has dementia so you have to play that.

I think he hits his old version of the character. I know plenty of old guys and they behave just like that

But hey, I appreciate you input. I think it’s subjective. And I can say I don’t know anything about acting at all. I just know what I like on the screen and what seems real to me.

No doubt. I do like him better as the old man. That part fits his self-conscious style better because the roll calls for his natural insecurity.

I don’t understand and can’t decipher the rest of your statement. Maybe I’m just not that perceptive, but I don’t see any insecurities, I don’t even know how that manifests itself to be honest.

It's hard to convey on a forum like this, but the actors who fully commit make you uncomfortable before they display discomfort on the screen. Think of a great comedian who can not laugh at a great joke before making you laugh and maybe even not then... Fully committed with every inch of their body.
