Daughter just got accepted to the greatest school in these United States. Of course the likelihood of attending is all given by financing. But as a proud father for my daughter to be one of 2100 admitted out of 33,000 applicants. That's just a cool deal. She basically has free tuition to University of Tampa or University of South Florida. It be nice if everybody could just say a little prayer tonight and at the financial God's blessing us with a good plan that my daughter could attend the U.

about a decade ago Miami gave my family a grant of 17k per year and we are upper middle class

hope it works out for your family.

on the flip side, schools like USC in CA didn't give us ****.

So from my experience miami is generous with their grants

Get in front of the Financial Aid office as fast as you can. They usually find a workable solution.
 
Yeah literally just go to the financial aid office and have a meeting asap. You definitely don't want to decide anything until then. They can also help you with whatever forms needed for outside scholarships.

Theres tons of outside scholarships you can receive if its really need based:

No idea what your financial situation is, but this is a must - https://cssprofile.collegeboard.org/
and so is the fafsa obviously - https://fafsa.ed.gov/
and if you're from florida and attend a school in florida, and have a need - http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/home/uamain.htm
then of course theres plenty of outside scholarships that are random local ones you can apply for which if you are minority, military, etc you can easily qualify for

No matter what your financial situation is, Miami will cover a lot if this is need based, and the fafsa, css, and florida scholarship/grants should either be able to cover the majority of the rest. If needed federal loans (perkins, stafford - subsidized/unsubsidized) to cover the rest, but I definitely wouldn't take any personal loans, they have too high of interest rates. Then all you got to worry about is keeping your gpa above a 2.5? or is it 3.0 to remain elligible for Miamis grants/scholarships.

Thanks good info we are going full board unfortunately we are in cinti ohio. So we will see how far we can get on the phone and emails.
 
Owing to the date, I imagine this is a Regular Decision acceptance. Is there any merit offer hidden in the notification? Make sure and check any documentation you receive and follow grover and Calinative umstudent's advice.

You need to arrange a meeting with a UM financial aid officer immediately.

Also, reach out to an admissions advisor. I know a few at UM personally and if they accept you, they want to work with you in any way they can to get you on campus. If you can't get in touch with an Financial Aid officer, get in touch with admissions advisors ASAP.

okay then you wont be elligible for any of the florida based one since youre from ohio. but maybe the Ohio ones can be applied to colleges outside ohio? I got a Calgrant but it couldn't be applied to Miami unfortunately - only instate schools.

i'm from California, so I didn't get a chance to meet with the student aid office either and i just accepted whatever the finaid package they sent me was, because it was good enough and better than what others offered, but imo that was a huge mistake because i qualified for a lot of non-federal financial aid through outside sources like the College board (CSS profile, they run the SAT) but I didn't know about all that entering miami. So I didn't meet with them until I had a problem with one of my scholarships, and they had me apply for that which ended up ****ing me off i didn't do it sooner, because i got a lot more money.

...basically unless they give you a finaid package that covers everything, call them and at least talk over the phone, or skype or something.

for perspective, departments were told by admissions that applications are up 35% this year (10 win seasons make a difference. go figure). they have to retool their admissions formula because the jump was too big to take the percentage of applicants that normally works. congrats to your daughter for making it into what might be the most competitive incoming class in school history.

Congrats to you and your family, Cincy! Hope y'all figure out how to make it work but don't go broke over it. That said, Miami was one of the best decisions of my life. Good luck!
 
A certain party basically stopped educational grants in alliance with Financial Institutions so that the banks profit from American kids getting higher degrees.

1. Make you pre pay into their finance options
2. Take out loans that Dept of Ed enforce for private institutions
3. Saddle millions of young adults with a 50k + debt before they ever begin a meaningful career
- All facts I'm sure many young adults and parents here can testify to.

Sadly those countries that offer free or debt free education have surpassed us in education statistics. When I went to college the Pell Grant took care of all expenses except housing and meals. It was like being on scholarship minus free room and board. It was an investment into education of its citizens that benefited workforce, companies, technology, innovations and increased earnings for investments and entrepreneurial ventures.
