OT: RIP former Cane Deandre Johnson

I do not know the facts for Deandre's tragedy as I am not speculating, and I pray for him and his entire family.

While it is often only mental health problems, the physical tole bodies can endure day in day out is astonishing but there is a limit even with help and once a human gets to that limit essentially nothing can help.

Physical pain drives to very dark spots of zero hope, which is where the mental health begins to deteriorate. I knew friends that were young and mentally stable, one got in a major car accident, other got terminal cancer/disease (colon/std's) and within 4-8 years they had taken their own lives, and they had all of the support you could imagine from friends/family/therapist.

I wish the United States like some other countries would allow us to peacefully accept death with assistance if the physical tole (terminally ill) is too much to live with, nope instead you are force fed pills to "cope" and your family or friends have to find you.

Check on the people in your life, you may know they are sick or maybe not but always be there for them. If they talk of suicide, you may be the last beacon of hope or the reassuring feeling of accepting death for what it is and what comes after.

Rest in Peace Deandre

We're way behind other countries more enlightened thinking on this subject.

You speak the truth losing all hope the relief will never come , the thought of it is scary prison with no doors in or out.

I think of the young men and women healthy spiritedness vibrant.

Go to war let alone POW come back looking 20 years older and a look in there eyes that they’ve seen something evil beyond our comprehension and are now someone else on edge they’ve been robbed of there spirit.

Tough stuff mental illness, really NO CURE for it just Toxic drugs that change you , sad

You're unaware that assisted euthanasia is allowed in eleven states and DC? I wonder if those other "more enlightened countries" just have people that aren't so quick to make statements before knowing the truth.
I was not aware my apologies, I was also thinking HotShot saying "more enlightened thinking on this subject" referred to everyone being more aware of it and possibly even considering it. I don't think he meant to take a cheap shot at the USA and neither did I

Wasn't looking for an apology, so all good. The more enlightened comment (not made by you) was unnecessary.

I'm aware.
Then why would you write such self-loathing stupidity? How exactly is another nation "more enlightened" when we are doing essentially the same thing already in parts of this country? I don't care what your opinion is either way on the topic of assisted euthenasia. I am taking issue with the idea you pushed that those other countries are more enlightened, which implies this country is less enlightened. Wouldn't it have been a more factually correct statement had you said "I am less enlightened" (meaning you, not me)? That's basically what you did when you wrote "I'm aware."

If you're wondering why I'm pushing back on this, it's because I'm tired of fellow Americans ripping America and its people from some self-perceived place of moral high ground, which is only just a difference of opinion.

Let me change it then and keep it in the USA.

When you only have 8 of 50 States allowing for Assisted Suicide, that's not a particularly enlightened view to my mind. It is some welcome progress that hopefully will expand over time. Hopefully, not too much time.

It's 11 plus DC, but I give you a salute for acknowledging the difference.
That said, rather than choosing words like "progress" or "enlightened", how about "different" or "in line with my views"? It's subtle on the surface, but the difference isn't.

Sorry to sound like an unsolicited lecturer, but I think this is super important. I hope you see that's where I'm coing from. If not, that's ok. Either way, Happy Thanksgiving. And Go Canes. Always.

It's all good. Consider those changes made.

I wonder about the differences among those 11 States + DC. Is it harder to navigate the systems that exist in one vs. the other. Or, are they all about the same in regard to requirements that must be met, time it takes, etc.?

Don't get me wrong. I realize you want and need a rigorous system to ensure the diagnosis/prognosis "qualifies," time for the person to change their mind, etc. Be interesting to see,. for example, the requirements that must be met here in the USA vs what the deal is with "Exit," the Swiss Euthanasia group of some notoriety.

Appreciate that. I'm not looking for this to get hostile.
I am no expert regarding the processes involved. I have a family member who is a hospice nurse in one of those states and has assisted in a few of those cases. I'm glad it's not me - I don't know what I would do. Death is a very personal thing and varies widely from person to person.

My main motive for pushing back on the take was because we've seen a couple assassination attempts in this country over the last year or so. I don't think murdering the opposition is the best way to go about things in OUR country. I've actually come to believe that the opposition can be an excellent source for learning and growth. When used properly, I think this leads to best outcomes. And yeah, I realize this is pie in the sky wishful thinking.

Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Same to you and yours this Thanksgiving.

All respect and thanks to your Hospice Nurse family member. Tough calling, and so needed.
