Belated Merry Christmas to everyone! Mr Aschoff’s death is tragic and sad, dying at such a young age. I’ve seen a lot of posts here and elsewhere speculating on the “real” cause of death, or how can someone die of pneumonia.

Pneumonia happens year round and has nothing to do with cold weather…it is more prevalent during the winter because people are indoors and in close contact much more during this time. While pneumonia is cited as the cause of death, most likely Mr Aschoff died of septic shock due to the pneumonia. Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming reaction to infection and can cause tissue damage, organ failure and death.

Sepsis kills 270,000 people a year, or 739 people a day, and accounts for 38 amputations a day…pneumonia is the leading cause of sepsis at 35%. Sepsis kills more than breast cancer (51,103), prostate cancer (40,046), AIDS (8,300), drug overdose (52,404) and obesity (39,590) combined!

The reason most people aren’t familiar with sepsis is because the federal government only spends a fraction of the money on sepsis that they do on those other medical conditions. For instance, AIDS received $3 BILLION in 2015 funding but only killed 8,300 people, whereas sepsis received $103 million and killed 195,214! And most AIDS patients actually die from sepsis...

In August 2015, my amazing wife went into septic shock from an undiagnosed bacterial infection and as a result had both hands and both feet amputated…if the initial ER Doctor had done his job most likely this would not have happened.

I’m sharing this in the hopes everyone on the board will learn about sepsis and share with others so maybe you and/or your family won’t have to live our nightmare.
