OT- OU DC out

That’s what happens when you have an offense that throws every down, doesn’t help the defense but hey that’s what y’all want right lol smh

You realize OU had arguably the best stable of RBs and a mobile qb last year and still had the issue on defense right?

Oklahoma run for 208 yards/game, 6.27 ypc vs D1, Miami runs for 186 yards/game, 4.31 ypc.

We had this conundrum in the off-season & fate provided an opportunity to fix our problem. "NCAA to allow 10th asst coach in '18". It almost felt like a gift from the heavens. Finally, an experienced ST coach is coming.... then we hired a GA LB coRch with no experience. Amateur hour.

i legit was ****ed off. I said there goes our chance to add some seasoning...nope lets promote a guy already on staff to coach a "striker" position with 2 players. Completely confusing actually..but im guessing Richt is gun shy after Pruitt had him shook those years. So he just wants guys that are comfortable with each other that wont shake things up.

I don't understand what's so confusing about this. Last season we were dead last in defensive 3rd down conversion percentage. We were getting shredded by average QBs and slot receivers on 3rd downs for a solid year. This season we incorporated the striker position and hired a dedicated coach for that position. Now we are first nationally in defensive 3rd down conversion percentage, and a very significant reason for that is the outstanding play from the striker position on 3rd downs.

Last.

First.

I'd like better special teams play also, but improving special teams should always take a back seat to improving defense. Because it doesn't matter how far you can kick the ball or how well you can cover returns or what kind of field position your opponent has...if the defense can't get off the field on third down it's all academic anyway.

OU doesn't even try to play defense. Let's not kid ourselves. Texas is not a very good football team. They are still that team that lost to Maryland with half their coaching staff suspended. Yet their offense did anything they wanted against OU.

Let me repeat that. Texas lost to Maryland. They barely beat Tulsa 28-21, and K State 19-14.

Sure, some of it maybe can be attributed to the tempo of the offense, but not enough to make Texas look like a Top 10 football team.

SO you agree with me then? @KrazyCane said OUs defense is bad because they pass the ball so much and I said last year the D was just as bad even with an elite Run game and an elite running QB.

I agree that their defense is bad. Is it made worse by the tempo the offense runs (both running and passing) and their tendency to score quickly? Well it sure doesn't help, but to me that's irrelevant. It's the offense's job to score points. Be it in 2 plays or 10 play 5 minute drives. It's on the defense to get stops and get themselves off the field.

Then we are in agreement.

How hard is it to improve special teams coverage?
I understand the kicker is what he is. But that return vs FSU looked liked our dudes where slow dancing with the FSU blockers. What a total cluster f...!!!!

I don't know the answer to this, and maybe a change needs to be made at ST coach. A lot of our issues on kick coverages seem to be a failure to tackle properly and take correct pursuit angles. Anyone of our defensive coaches should be able to help out in that department, yet here we are.

The point I was trying to make is that correcting kick coverage issues is way on the bottom of the list of "Shlt that needs fixin" when you're dead last in defensive 3rd down conversion percentage. That was our single biggest issue that had to be addressed in the off season, and so far the results would indicate that we hired the right man for the job.

Doubt seriously that Richt looks at Stoops this season but who knows come the off-season? We really need a ST coach but maybe Stoops can come in at another capacity? I wouldn’t make him DC even if Manny somehow left tho, the guy screwed OU

I hear you and agree.. I just didn’t think that it would be such a difficult thing to fix given our athletes. But then again we’re trying to redshirt some dudes and we’re still under scholarship limits. But this field position thing is getting old and it’s going to cost our team more than 1 loss if it keeps up.

Are we seriously discussing hiring the 1 DC in the nation that lines his DBs up further back then Manny?
Does no one remember this legendary defensive **** up. I can't find the whole game, but he did this ALL GAME. This is just 1 drive, but the same thing happened all game.

Yeah but whoever coaches two of the linebacker positions should be able to coach the third
