Given the fact that the episode aired in November of 1984...and would have been filmed during the summer of 1984...that means the jersey was either "custom" or was based on a player from 1he 1983 national championship team...a guy who was drafted by the Dolphins in 1984...

JAY BROPHY...

EDIT: ****, looks like he wore 53 for the Dolphins and 54 for the Hurricanes. Does anyone know if he had a jersey number change at Miami? Maybe it was a custom-made job...

Yes, it might very well be Rob Canel in 1983, and then before that, it was John Canei in 1982 and earlier (NOT the same names, but maybe brothers and/or misspellings?). I wonder if the Miami Vice people went down to AllSports (before it was called AllCanes) and got what they THOUGHT was a custom Jay Brophy jersey, given that Jay played for both UM and the Dolphins.

Is it possible that number wasn’t assigned when that episode was filmed? I wouldn’t know the laws now, let alone then, but would the production needed permission from school for the actress to wear the jersey? I’m probably totally wrong, but thought I’d ask.

The actor who played Crockett's first partner (killed) in the pilot?

Jimmy Smits.

The original Lieutenant (for a few episodes before Edward James Olmos was available?

Gregory Sierra (from Barney Miller, among other shows).

The dealer working for Calderon?

Mykelti Williamson (Bubba from Forrest Gump).

The guy who shot the dealer working for Calderon?

Martin Ferrero, who later played Izzy in the series, and was also later in Jurassic Park.

Trust me, back then nobody gave a **** around rights/permissions. And I remember what the UM merchandise was like, and what AllSports was like, when I enrolled at UM. We still had "clearance sale" national championship merchandise from 1984 in the UM Bookstore in 1986.

With THAT particular jersey number, I'd be willing to bet that someone either "borrowed" it from Canei (the player whose jersey it was) or else it was custom-made at AllSports. In my mind, from the times I've seen the show, I always thought it was Jay Brophy because he wore 53 with the Dolphins.
