OT: Matt Rhule to Nebraska

As someone that lived in Texas, you would know that they lost ALL recruiting momentum, they lost a ton of talent off of those teams, because Rhule had to dismiss or move people out of the program. They also had to deal with the school clamping down on certain things in regards to discipline, because they had to find a way to overcome the PR nightmare that was the end of the Briles era. Just because the NCAA didn't come after them(And even then, the NCAA was breathing down their necks heavily for a year or two), didn't mean that a lot of that foundation wasn't damaged due to what Briles did.

Again, Golden may have laid the foundation, but when you move from the MAC to the American, and you have a guy in between that was mediocre, you have to build back some of that. When they moved to the American, you saw that Temple was still somewhat undertalented, as shown by Addazio's last season when they were consistently DEMOLISHED in conference play. Let that settle in. Golden's foundation was built on them playing in the MAC, the American was a HUGE STEP UP and they had to meet it.
We can agree to disagree but i see his ceiling being Bo Pelini there being a perennial 9 game winner.

He’s an average coach at best… recruiting and NIL will be something that will hold him back even more.

He's an excellent recruiter - that's kind of his thing. For all the hate he (rightfully) gets in Charlotte, he turned that roster around. A good QB and that's a .500 team.

He's massively overrated because Carolina is a greasefire and most college coaches that move up to the NFL turn out to be pretty bad? Yep, makes a ton of sense. Think about it, there are far more Urban Meyer and Steve Spurrier type flame outs in the NFL, than there are Jimmy Johnsons that win big at both levels.
He started that greasefire. Dude was given free reign to rebuild that roster - you can't cycle through 3 QBs in 3 years then point fingers at others.

Baylor went 1-11 and 7-6 his first two years

Temple went 2-10 and 6-6 his first two years

you make good points but I can also say I am not sure how much Golden and Briles had to do with the successful years.

when successful coaches leave a “foundation“ that usually means the next coach does most of their winning with the previous coaches recruits or guys that actually played a significant amount of snaps with the previous coach
You've seen it now with Aranda - Rhule's kids left after last season and look what Baylor did.

I'm having to defend Rhule on this board - a guy I wouldn't **** on if he was on fire - we really do have some special posters.

Barring Nebraska finding a way to poach Nick Saban, or convincing Urban Meyer to come there, they aren't consistently outrecruiting ANYBODY. It's NEBRASKA, and thanks to things I noted earlier(Expansion of options for mid tier guys to play, depopulation of the one major population center in their recruiting area and leaving the Big XII), they aren't going to be able to stockpile talent like they once did. That said, they can get enough talent, with the right coach and be a relevant program. Pelini was winning 9-10 games per year, Nebraska was a solid Top 25 team throughout his tenure with some solid finishes. He had 3 10 win seasons in his tenure, I'm quite sure NU fans would be happy with Rhule being a less abrasive version of Pelini.

You win 10 games every other year, you are one or two bounces away from possibly being in the CFP, especially with the expansion that is coming. Keep in mind, Rhule has connections in Texas thanks to his time at Baylor and on the east coast, so he may be able to reestablish those ties, which gives NU some additional places to grab talent.

Quality hire by NEB. Rhule did well at Temple and Baylor. Flamed out in the NFL, but most do. Better hire than elevating yet another G5 HC.

Lol, good thing Nebraska just gave him a raise to keep him from leaving.

Are we certain he doesn't end up at PSU? Feel like they will spend whatever they need to in attempt to save face. If there's a chance Raiola portals why the **** would he stay in Lincoln?

Nebraska will be back

How's that possible? Are some of these coaches just going all in on the transfer portal like free agency and ignoring HS recruiting?

10 kids?

I am sure Nebraska feels really good about this hire.

But then again, they thought they hit the jackpot with Scott Frost.

They, like us, just might have something dying under the floorboards up there. Hopefully they are cool getting back to Bo Pelini type results this time around. I'm sure they miss it.
Nebraska still miss it.

Last coach to win 9 games at Nebraska was Mike Riley. A decade ago. Sheesh.
