The man who shot Joe McKnight has been released from custody and no charges have been filed yet ... this according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Dept.
We spoke with a rep who tells us 54-year-old Ronald Gasser -- a white male -- was questioned and released "sometime overnight" after officials believed they had no reason to hold him any longer.
The Sheriff's Dept. tells us ... Gasser "definitely" shot the ex-NFL running back -- but there are "questions about the circumstances surrounding what led up to it."
The rep tells us the investigation is still very much open and the case could go to the grand jury or the district attorney, which will decide whether or not charges should be filed.

Probably a self-defense situation. You're basically giving someone a free shot to execute you when you get out of your car in a road rage beef.

Yeah. According to the stand your ground law, as I understand it, this guy would probably get off in Florida if McKnight did anything even remotely threatening to him, whether McKnight was armed or not. Not sure if they have the same type of law in Louisiana.

Looks the "normal" witnesses in these type of cases are up to their old tricks of lying again about what they saw. Maybe they could actually tell the truth and see where it goes from there.

Sad. Such a waste.

No kidding, over whatever happened on the road and both people were okay until they got out of the car. So damned stupid.

McKnight had one of the best high school highlight tapes I've ever seen. Geez, dumb **** in the world.

Not surprised that like "normal" in these situations, the blame is always first placed on the victim. #Amerikkka 's tricks are far older, and always work. Check the Walter Scott trial and Philando Castille case for further proof. Ridiculous.

Or we could discuss the Michael Brown case in which all of the eyewitnesses lied in order to make Brown a victim.

McKnight might be a victim or he might not.
