OT: Happy Veteran's Day

You are welcome. And now off to get some freebies. It seems I have collected more monetarily now than when I was on active duty, especially my Home Depot discount. It may be hard to believe, but when I entered the Army in 1970, before All Volunteer, the pay was $79 per month. My father, when he entered in 1943, was making $45 month.

Feeling cute. Might eat for free at Olive Garden later, I don't know.

My father also entered in 1943. Was your lucky enough to see D-Day?

No he was photo recon in Burma. I had an uncle who spent the war in Bermuda, another who was mustering out of enlistment at Pearl Harbor when attacked, in for the duration in the Pacific, and another uncle who went through Japan after they dropped the bomb. Told great stories of going through the atom bombed cities. Crazy what they didn't know or wouldn't admit.

Mine got sent to University of Maine in winter to become an engineer until they decided they need infantry even more. He got to Europe in September. He drove the RedBall and fought in the Bulge, and even after all that, was still grateful he'd missed D-Day.

I was the last of the draft induced enlistees who joined late enough to miss most of Nam. Spent three years in Germany in civilian clothes in a Counterintelligence unit in Frankfurt. I could tell you how I personally won the Cold War but that is still classified.

Thank you to all veterans and current military especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice or suffered injury. Because of you we are free and live in a democratic society governed by our constitution. The men and women who fought and provided support in WWII are unquestionably our greatest generation. The military is the back bone of this country along with our constitution. Every day we should give thanks to our vets and military.
