OT - but this is still amazing and awe-inspiring - bridge to Sanibel

Mammoths and Mastodons were plentiful in Florida 10,000 to 15,000 yrs ago....they migrated originally from Alaska. Florida also had Giant Ground Sloths..and Sabre Tooth Cats (Smilodon)....Btw...some pics of Meglodon teeth I found in Bartow. (Old Phosphate mines)View attachment 214297

Holy shlt that thing is bigger than your hand. Imagine running into one of those things on a swim in the ocean

Holy shlt! that’s an incredible find. I mean, I didn’t even know those things ranged that far south.

I honestly can’t find the words to describe how amazing I think that is. I’m not an expert on archaeology or anything like that, but that has to be a hugely significant find. Somebody should write that up. That should be an archaeology scientific journal or something like that.
I was snorkeling in about 8ft of water (The Santa Fe River has amazing clarity the further north you go due to the number of Springs in that stretch)..the further South the water turns brownish from lack of springs, and the Tanin from the Cypress trees. I saw the tip sticking out of the Sand, and thought I'd only find a small piece of a Tusk. My buddy swam over and with his help unlodged it. I kind of kept it unknown to any authorities, just in case they'd try to confiscate it, but it's perfectly legal to keep any fossilized animal pulled from the State rivers. Anything Man-made (Arrowheads...Pottery etc)...is illegal...but it's really not enforced, unless it's some douchbag Game Warden.

I mean like I said I’m no expert on archaeology or finding an animal remains, my background is in science but not in that science, but I love reading about stuff like this and National Geographic or just in the regular news it’s just kind of an interest of mine.

I just don’t think people reading this realize what a huge deal this is - that is truly an amazing find. I mean I’ve never heard of a whole tusk being found like that in Florida. I’m still in awe about it.

Yeah I’m familiar somewhat with springs, I’ve done a little spring diving and snorkeling myself, and you’re right the springs seem to be mostly north of Tampa. A lot of people aren’t aware of this world right beneath their feet, there’s tons of springs, with pure clear water.
