Origin of Throwing Up The []_[]??

It was commonly referred to as UM when I went 30+ years ago.
It was Also referred to as The U of Miami and Suntan U, when I went there 50+ years ago. So just a short hop, skip and jump to just” The U”. But when remains elusive.

You're kidding, right?

It started in the 1980s.

Look, here is the reality.

Sometimes things that LATER become tradition, or take on new meaning, have their origins years earlier.

The split U was invented in the 1970s by an alum of my fraternity. It was supposed to be used in all sports. For a long stretch, it was only used in football.

There are a ton of cheers I learned in the 1980s that got outlawed by Tad Foote. ****, the real old heads remember the sexually suggestive “banana cheer” that the cheerleaders used to do (“peel the banana and…uhhh…take a bite”). Among others. We don’t play “Hail To The Spirit of Miami U” as much as we once did.

But I promise you…we had a lot of different references that became much bigger years later. We were The U in the 80s and 90s, but it wasn’t as widespread until Kellen Winslow’s “Soldier” rant. We were The Canes all along (“We got some Canes Over Here”). We were also Miami and UM. JJ started the 4 fingers (Michigan comeback?). I believe that the hurricanes warning flags got started when I was in school (I remember one of the flag carriers blew out his knee carrying one of the flags on a windy day and collapsed on the field). And I remember the smoke getting started by Sebastian with just a fire extinguisher back in the day.

Lots of great memories.
Does anyone remember that in the early 70’s there was a female companion to the male ibis. My buddy Trixie dated her around 73.

Since we’re talking about origins, do you guys remember when the 4 fingers started. I think it was during the 2010s it started with Stephen Morris, but I can be wrong.
Four fingers goes back to *at least* Jimmy Johnson era and may well have been a Howard thing. I think I vaguely remember it. The 4 fingers at the 4th Q is an old tradition that was never abandoned even when the team sucked and *gave up* leads in the 4th quarter more often than not
