There are lots of problems the portal can cause. A QB sits in all the meetings, learns your system and then transfers to a common opponent, the NFL has coaches who do this to get game plans.
During recruiting a team's coaches get real chummy with a kid that goes elsewhere. What is to prevent them from using the comfort of contact to solicit this kid to enter the portal?
These kids stay in contact with each other and you're player knows a star player is not thrilled with the way things are going, so player one convinces player two to to enter the portal.
The portal could make discipline not effective, a player gets reprimanded and then hits the portal.

Funny just last week I got destroyed by the resident "experts" on here who told me only a **** program exploits the portal and there's no way it's a huge part of the future.
Question for all:

How best to build a program? Organically through recruiting and adding a piece via portal...

or...

being reliant on adding several gets via the portal to fill the gaps year after year?

Not all disimilar to competing philosophies in NFL... build team through draft vs free agent carousel...
