Opinion: It’s the CULTURE!

This is just my opinion, but I think the primary culprit of Miami’s lack of success is and has been the culture. There has been a culture problem within the program since the Coker days and that culture problem is an extension of the culture problem in South Florida prep sports. South Florida produces the greatest volume of high end talent in the country, and these kids know it. They grow up being worshipped and told how great they are, and simultaneously, they don’t get the coaching and development that kids elsewhere around the country get at the prep level. This breeds an attitude of entitlement and a stubborn belief that their talent alone is enough to propel them to success in college and the NFL. This attitude carries forward to college and is exactly why Miami is where it is today.

You might ask, why is Miami “special” in this regard? Many other programs have been pillaging SF for talent for years, and they don’t seem to have the same problems. In fact, it seems the SF kids who go elsewhere always ball out. Well, the answer is simple. Those other teams only have a hand full of these players at any given time while Miami’s roster is full of them. At those other schools, these players are absorbed into a new, better culture and the ones that adopt it succeed. Side note, I also think this is why we often see Miami players become more successful once they are in the NFL.

At Miami, the same culture these kids learned at the prep level is reinforced because that’s what they continue to be surrounded by every day in the locker room. It’s all they know.

Sure, we have other problems, but I believe this is the biggest one, and if we can’t find a way to fix it, it doesn’t matter who coaches this program or how many 4 and 5 stars we have on the roster.

One would think being booed off the field and losing games you shouldn’t on national tv would cure that right quick?

I agree 1000% with this. AND - these kids aren’t as good as they think they are. When Bandy said that he, Ivey and Blades all consider themselves first rounders - I just laughed and thought to myself - that’s the problem right there.

You’re probably right but it all starts at the top with a Manny. And from day 1 Manny started #TNM and should’ve hired better coaches to instill a better culture and not G5 coaches. If you’re truly serious about changing the culture then you should go get the best available coaches. Not bartenders and High school coaches.

For 15 years, the "culture" of the inept BOT is to hire equally inept corches. That's the root of our culture problem. Long long ago, we've had several great coaches who got the local kids to produce to the NC level, more than once.

Again, it's not the fans, it's not the local kids, it's not the facilities, it's not the money, it's not the conference, it's the BOT/AD/corches.

Like I said, we have other problems too. But the culture is the biggest problem. Why is it that Donaldson is a fatter slob today than he was in high school? Why is it that a 2 star from NC can come in and lock down the starting LT position from Day 1 by simply outworking everyone else? Why is it that our weight room numbers are laughable compared to what other programs achieve?

We need kids who eat sleep and drink football. Kids who are willing to do whatever is necessary to be successful. I think Manny sees that. He’s talked about it over and over again. These issues can’t be fixed over night though. Maybe Manny is the guy to do it, maybe not, but just assuming that hiring the “best” coaches money can buy is totally naive. I could name a dozen programs that have been throwing money at their issues for years and year to no avail.

What happened mostly in the 80’s no longer applies. The culture in SF has changed dramatically.

You’re **** right it is. These kids are a product of a bad sports culture in SF in general. Unfortunately, we are swimming against the current in that regard.

We suck because our staffs cannot develop talent. The boomer answer is "bah gawd these gosh darn kids are just divas! Yeah that's it, divas!"

When in reality, the answer is simply we have had bad coaches for almost 20 years and we aren't good at developing guys or maximizing their talent by putting them in the best positions to be successful. That's why they do well at programs with real coaches and they constantly bust here.

False. Yes, coaching has been a problem, but not as big of a problem as the culture. CFB is littered with programs who have spent big time money on the best coaches money can buy and still floundered, and they’ve done it over and over again because they were too naive to think maybe the issue is bigger than coaching. Our biggest problem is culture and it doesn’t matter how much money we spend on coaches. If the coach can’t fix the culture issue, nothing material is going to change.

Glad we have Lil Blades. Really am. But. . . he can get our guys chanting Hit, Stick, Bust, ****. . . all day and all night long, in vain. In his elders' days, they PLAYED Hit, Stick, Bust **** and had plenty of reasons to Talk ****.
This is the culture shift

Yep. The only thing that gives me hope is that it seems as though Manny was able to change the culture on the defensive side of the ball. It still needs work, but I do think he realizes that culture is our biggest issue. Can he fix it? We’ll see.

Kids were scared of Jimmy. They were scared of Butch who laid down the law in his early team meeting and all but confiscated weapons.

Manny had a mock WWF (i still call it that) disco show.

It's definitely the culture.
