There’s plenty of hype surrounding Miami heading into 2026, and it’s easy to understand why. After adding impact talent through the transfer portal and bringing back some of its top offensive weapons, On3 ranked the Hurricanes as the nation’s No. 1 offense entering the season.

The biggest reason for the excitement starts with Darian Mensah. After leading Duke to the ACC Championship Game, Mensah heads to Coral Gables following a season where he completed 67% of his passes for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He was one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the country, and now he’ll be running Shannon Dawson’s offense with arguably the best group of skill players he’s ever had around him.
Miami also made sure Mensah wouldn’t be starting over with a brand-new group of receivers. His favorite target at Duke, Cooper Barkate, followed him through the transfer portal after catching 72 passes for 1,106 yards last season. That chemistry is already there, and it gives Miami a proven No. 1 receiver before the season even begins.
The Hurricanes weren’t done adding weapons. Cam Vaughn arrives from West Virginia after recording 541 receiving yards and four touchdowns, while Vandrevius Jacobs transfers in from South Carolina after posting 548 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Neither player has to be “the guy” at Miami, and that’s what makes this offense so dangerous. Defenses can’t key in on one receiver because there are legitimate playmakers across the field.
Then there’s the talent that never left. Malachi Toney is coming off one of the best seasons by a receiver in school history, finishing with 109 catches for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns. He became one of the most dangerous players in college football as a freshman, and with Mensah throwing him the football, there’s every reason to believe those numbers could climb even higher this season he is a plain out stud.
The running game is in good hands once again, too. Mark Fletcher Jr. turned down the NFL and returns after rushing for 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns. With so much depth at the running back spot it’s pretty clear Miami has one of the best rooms in the country. Jordan Lyle, Charmar Brown, and Girard Pringle Jr. that should just tell you how deep this team really is, it’s kind of terrifying.
Don’t forget about Elijah Lofton, either. While the receivers will grab most of the attention, Lofton gives Miami another matchup problem at tight end. He’s a reliable target over the middle, can create mismatches against linebackers and safeties, and is the kind of player quarterbacks love having when plays break down. Last season he put up some good numbers with 23 receptions, 218 receiving yards, and 3 touchdowns and wasn’t even the main target last season expect him to get more receptions this season and the tight-end spot to be more important.
Expectations in Coral Gables couldn’t be much higher. On3 recently ranked Miami as the No. 1 offense in college football entering the 2026 season, and it’s a ranking that makes plenty of sense in my opinion. Between the talent brought in through the transfer portal and the stars who decided to come back for another year, the Hurricanes have all the pieces to field one of the most explosive offenses in the country.
