Like Patterson, this move did not catch us by surprise. Horton barely played in spring and has been injured for much of his Miami tenure. He had a ton of hype coming in (from both the staff and myself) coming off his breakout senior season, and he has all the physical tools. He's one of the first guy people spot when they come to practice. Unfortunately, he's usually off to the side.

Entering Year 3, this is a situation where availability and consistency are the primary issues. I expect Miami to pursue a veteran at the 4th DT spot.

Everybody who jumps in is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. An impact player is worth it. But I don’t see us spending impact player money on a solid player, which happens often with DT-starved teams. We have some good players there.

Just thinking ahead…
After 2025, we lose Blay, Moten, and likely the veteran DT we will attempt to bring in.

We will be back in the portal next year looking for 2 more DT’s as our main guys will be Scott, Simpson, and Jones. At some point, you have to pay for the impact guys and likely overpay. That’s just the name of the game if you want to compete on a significant level.

Because we have better DTs than we did last year and money isn’t infinite.

If an impactful, NFL-type player comes available and has interest, I promise we will take that call. But in general, that’s a market that always leads to overspending and we’re not desperate.

If it’s an impact guy, that’s a different story.

But most DTs in the Portal are not Walter Nolan or Derrick Harmon. Blay, who is being treated as an afterthought here, was the #2 DT in the Portal.

This is why it’s important to discuss priorities. As you know, this isn’t fantasy football. With that said, we need to be open-minded if an impactful, NFL-type player becomes available at any position and has Miami interest.

Again, I’m fine with overpaying for impactful DTs. But that’s much more likely to happen at the high school level.

Exactly my point, our M.O.is to settle. Scott and Moten haven't proven to be enough in actual football games and who are they competing against for PT?
 
Ohio State needs impact DL this Spring portal like oxygen so I expect the market to be sky high $$$-wise

You conflate arguments. We got the #1 pick in the draft because we punted on HS recruiting and we were desperate. If we had more than Emory and Judd we wouldn't have waited Cam out in the draft and likely would have had Howard. A much lesser QB.
Now make this same argument for DB last year when you said we had enough. Or RB this year with 2 unproven guys or WR before that. Being a realist can also mean the ability to identify a weakness beforehand not just when you are completely desperate because you have no other option.

There is a grand canyon between "not desperate" & set at the position. Can't afford to go into the season with just a room full of potential. We should approach Bain & Mesidoor's last season the same as Beck. Get them the help they need to maximize their impact.

And Blay definitely unfairly gets marginalized(myself included). But based on recent portal track record at DT of guys coming from lower levels or "lesser teams", he's far from a sure thing even though he's clearly a better prospect than all of them.

That’s next year tho. What we need next yr is different than this year. Unless you’re saying we need to get a High quality Sophomore DT who was a frosh last yr…

What explains why we wouldn’t do it again is A) we already did by getting Blay, and B) we have X money and need to prioritize it for what we have larger needs at. Seriously you act like we don’t already have a roster and should just completely reset the entire team because it doesn’t meet your standards. If you have 6 guys to add to this roster in spring with a set amount of money how are you distributing that money? What D$ is saying the gameplan should be impact WR > impact Safety > Rotational DT > Rotational LB > Depth RB. But that obviously who actually enters the portal is what will ultimately decide who we pursue and prioritize. It’s also a fact that DT supply is usually limited and the top guys are extremely expensive. Similar to WR. Whether we get an impact WR or DT will likely directly have opportunity cost of us getting an impact player at the other position.

well D$ has clearly said we need to add a DT4, so where is anyone saying we are set at the position? Nowhere.
