OL Recruiting prior to Mario

We need a big time OT transfer in the portal IMO. Instant impact veteran that can stabilize the line. Mario can completely turn over this line in the next 30 days.

LT - Transfer/Campbell, Samson, McCoy
LG - Rivers, Traore, Kinsler
C - Clark, Denis, Lew
RG - Cooper, Sagapolu, Tripp
RT - Campbell/Mauigoa, Tinilau

Transfer/Graduate: Chris Washington, Laurence Seymour, Zion Nelson, DJ Scaife, Justice Oluwasean

12 months into the job that would be a really nice transformation but depth is still concerning considering the youth. Would be another year away from really having a solid line.
I think traore is out of eligibility after this year

OL recruiting has been horrendous. Legit negligence.

We've had one of the worst OL in the ACC for years now and these guys have played a lot together...and never got better.

We've been plugging holes with mid G5 talent, too. Justice Oluwaseun and Jarrid Williams were average players at the G5 level and they were starters and regular players for us for more than one year. Transfers like Isaiah Walker, Osmane Traore, Tommy Kennedy and others were attempts to cover up poor recruiting and none provided us with much of anything. Most of the freshmen that Justice and Diaz recruited were very far away from contributing.

The OL is in bad bad shape and outside of the players Mario and Mirabal got...maybe Rivers is the only decent building block.
Been saying that for years, Now do linebackers and cornerbacks. Manny Diaz set this program back years.

@gogeta4 has covered linebackers a lot over the years. I piggy back his takes on this. One of the big issues is that Manny had a TYPE that he looked for in his linebackers. Those linebackers - in theory - fit what he wanted from his linebackers, but there are certain things you can't teach and a lot of that happens between the ears or there were physical limitations. It is what separated Shaq Quarterman from say Austin-Cave or Shaq from Corey Flagg. They could do a lot of the same things, at least on tape.

Now with a transition to another staff, we've got a lot of linebackers that just don't fit. You can couple linebacker recruiting with "striker" recruiting. The same idea...very specific player type that Manny was looking for and now under another staff, they are without a home. We've got a lot of defensive line players that also fit this narrative and we are seeing them leave (Roberts, Haye).

Cornerback...IMO...is a little different...just a lot a lot a lot of misses. Its why we are starting/playing DJ Ivey and Te'Corey Couch for years on end. We were lucky - I guess - to get Tyrique Stevenson who has been a solid player for us. We just ended up with a lot of nobody after recruiting.

I disagree on the linebacker recruiting , He might have looked for his type of linebacker but he literally hardly recruited any at all. Based on his recruiting his type of linebacker was short and slow.

We also used only two linebackers in our base alignment...hence the low numbers. We were playing a striker, which is a pseudo-linebacker in his scheme.

Athleticism and ability to cover were non-existent on most of the linebackers he offered. There were a few coverage linebacker prospects we'd get involved with, but they'd be Plan C, D, etc. types. They were all box linebackers that could blitz. Corey Flagg has become the exact kind of linebacker Manny had hoped...he's like a Shaq Quarterman after taxes. Less athletic, not as good, but does a lot of the same things that Shaq did well and does them well to a slightly lesser degree.

Guys like Gil Frierson, Keontra Smith, Sam Brooks, Avery Huff, Jalen Harrell, Austin-Cave, Corey Flagg, James Williams, Chase Smith, Thomas Davis, Deshawn Troutman, Tyler Johnson all recruited from 2018-21 to play linebacker/striker. The numbers are "fine"...but a lot of guys that we are now seeing having trouble finding homes to play in another defense.

Man, watching this Michigan vs OSU Game.... Just looking at the bodies on their OL and you can see why we've been struggling, our guys don't look NOTHING like that. They got some COUNTRY strong boys on those OLs. Mario recruiting bodies like this and will have us solid in the trenches in no time man.

Our blue chip ratio is bad when looking at the lines. Two on the OL: DJ and Seymore
Actually we had a few 4 stars in bold, not sure if they were bad evals or no development, probably both.
2021 (3): McLaughlin, Rodriguez, Seymore
2020 (4): Rivers, Walker (T), Washington, Williams (GT)
2019 (5): Nelson, Clark, ElGammal , Traore (T), Kennedy (GT)
2018 (4): Scaife, Campbell, Reed, Boulware (GT)
2017 (5): Donaldson, Gaynor, Herbert, Hillery, Dystra
2016 (2): Johnson, Brown (T)
2015 (6): Milo, St. Louis, Jones (JC), Loftus, Mahoney, Gauthier

Does Seymore look like a 4-star player to you?

What about Scaife?
