Okay now I see why we're going to play a lot of 4-2-5.

So much more versatility and it plays right into the strengths of the types of players we usually recruit from south Florida. The number of freak athletes playing linebacker at 190 here is through the roof.

That's the truth

View attachment 60817Linebacker play has to improve, this is their defense now and they are the leaders.

For one the defense was good in 2016 and good in 2017, there wasnt that much of a drop off actually. For as much people say the decline they also improved quite a bit in other areas we lacked the previous years imo

Getting off the field on 3rd down is the biggest thing we need to do on defense period. It’s a problem

We were better in 2016 and played better offenses then we did in 2017.

Years : 2016
Total yards: 24th
Pass Defense: 46th
Rush Defense: 30th

Years : 2017
Total yards: 38th
Pass Defense: 50th
Rush Defense: 43th

Opponent rankings in total offense.

2016: FAM: N/A, FAU:N/A APP ST: #42 GT: #81 FSU: #24th UNC: #49 VT: #37 ND: #62 PIT: #27 UVa: #103 NC State: #66 Duke: #85
Average: 57 (Out of 10 Games ACC + ND and APP ST)
ACC Only Average: 59 (No ND)

2017: BCU: N/A Toledo: #13 Duke: #92 FSU: #108 GT: #61 SYR: #28 UNC: #103 VT: #40 ND: #26 UVa: #107 PIT: #95
Average: 67 (Out of 10 games ACC + ND and Toledo)
ACC Only Average: 79 (No ND/Post)

Most of the ACC offenses the in 2017 were down right terrible compared to 2016 and yet our defense stats were better in 2016 then 2017. All we did well in 2017 was Sack, TFL, and turnovers.

You cant build your defense off forcing turnovers because what happen when Clemson didn't turn it over? What happeneded after Wisconsin 1st turnover? We got ran out of the stadium because we did nothing else well.

great power point on how the 4-2-5 actually breaks down and works if done right. I started using it when I was the JV coach out at West Broward, also tried to bring it to Acrh McCarthy but none of those old coaches like the new style.

When were you at West Broward?
I think those guys out there are doing a **** good job.

Coach Walker at Arch Bishop is prehistoric. I was the DC for his son at Cooper City in 2014. He's the same way. I think he hated my concepts. Always wanted me to go Cover-0 and send the house. (with CC kids lol) Guess that's why he's not there anymore.

Best thread going in a while.

When I first saw the title, I didn’t click on thinking it was some sarcastic BS about how we didn’t have the right athlete mix for the 4-2-5.

Glad I finally looked in.

2006-2015 was the last year I coached at West Broward and then moved to Arch for 2016.
Coach Dilworth out at West Broward really has it moving forward, he is a good coach and guy.
Coach walker is stuck in Stone Age hence the fact I only stuck around for 1 season. Power run and 3-4 D. Just hired his son this offseason to run his D at Arch.

That's cool man. Good luck to you.
Thanks for coaching.

LOL..Man a 4-2-5 is essentially a nickel defense...we've been doing this since Manny's been here.

His first year..we had the 3 safety look with Jenk, Carter, and Jaquan.

Last season, Bandy was that guy.

This year..he's using Finley and Smith

Either way...I hope to see more of it...I hope it becomes our base defense.

It will be our base if you watched the spring game.

Only thing I don't like about the 4-2-5 is the ILBs are too close to each other. Me personally I'd rather base out of a dime (4-1-6) and take it from there.
So you want teams to abuse us in the run game for like 200+ a game? You can't run a dime defense as your base package without giving up half a billion yards in the run game. Not enough size up front

LOL...the Miami 4-3 was a dime defense, JJ got from it Belichick.

That’s giving the defense an out, plenty of times when the defense wasn’t on they sh*t the offense bailed them out like vs FSU when the defense gave up 2 tds late , the offense responded and won the game. Another example in the Virginia game, defense goes down 14-0, offense scores to tie it up, the defense goes down again by 14 and along with Jaquan’s int and the offense saving the defense *** once again we won that game. Had a 14-3 lead vs Wisconsin too(things were against our favor with the refs and everything but the defense made it too easy too).

Imo blame can defintiely be had on both sides, bottom line we let too many teams run all these plays on us when we’re are on defense. That’s due to sometimes the inefficient offense but even more so to not getting off the field promptly when on 3rd down and allowing teams to extend drives. Always like to say control what you can control, so that’s more so on the defense honestly

:noidea: guess the other 50 minutes didn't matter

Wait, what? Either you're joking or you're confused about something. A dime defense features 6 defensive backs. It's literally impossible to have 4-3 personnel in a "dime" package.

Also, the main difference between a 4-2-5 and a traditional nickle is the player being used at the nickle (or rover, or striker or whatever) position. A traditional nickle package puts a premium on pass coverage even at the expense of stopping the run. Normally used in obvious passing situations when you prefer your extra DB be able to cover a slot receiver. (Bandy) A 4-2-5 uses an extra safety who is more suited to playing the run even if his coverage ability isn't quite as good as a true nickle corner's (Smith) Also a traditional nickle alignment usually has two safeties lined up deep with three corners lined up on or near the line of scrimmage. A 4-2-5 alignment often deploys one free safety lined up deep in the middle of the field and both the strong safety and rover lined up closer to the line on each side. Obviously, it's dependent on the offensive formation and coverage called.

what does this mean for mccloud? I'm assuming it cant be good

It means a lot less reps against spread teams. He tends to look great against the run (his monster game against ND) but gets exposed in the passing game. The third linebacker is becoming the defensive version of the full back in today's game. Only used in obvious run situations.
