Offensive Line is a Weakness

View as article
Is zion better tho? Based on how zion has looked i have a hard time believing herbert and hillary are even worse.
Herbert and Hillery at least deserve a look. What do we have to lose? OLine is already bottom of the barrel. Throw them them in and see what happens, you never know. Some guys have bad practice habits but show up for game day.

The Tommy Kennedy issue aside I fail to see how Manny and Butch are to blame for the hand they are dealt. Manny had no say what went on with offensive recruiting while he was DC; so how’s he responsible for the lack of talent on the OL? Blame him for this past recruiting class fine, but he had what a month or two to piece an OL class together?

This seems like piling on for the sake of piling on. The OL is a mess and while scheme could help it wouldn’t solve the issue - Roman readily admits this. The OP seems like much ado about nothing. We know OL sucks. We know Zion shouldn’t be playing, but he is...what does that say about the guys behind him? Now, if you want to argue Enos and Butch are deliberately playing inferior players on purpose then I have to ask why would they do that? What’s the end game there? If they are playing the best players, then do you still blame Manny for the multiple misses at the OL spot despite his nothing having a say in the matter until now?

Enos more than anyone deserves blame (Searles and Richt are to blame for the personnel issue) because he should be scheming around the OL....tempo and quick passing game (undercenter and shotgun...balance in order to still provide diversity to run game). The opening drive against UF should be the offense’s blueprint until the guys up front improve (Reed should have been starting over Donaldson for the simple fact that fat *** Donaldson can barely walk).
They do nothing to ameliorate the problems. That’s why they catch ****.

Couple important things you missed here in blaming the staff. First, Kennedy was recruited by and catfished the previous staff prior to Manny taking the HC job. Second, if these are the best guys we’ve got, what is this staff supposed to do about it? That’s the hand they’ve been dealt.
Bingo!!!! You can’t judge this staffs roster management after only 4 games. I can only judge this staffs roster management after 3-4 years

I've never played or coached OL, but surely the cause of these problems is Searles.

Our upper classman OL aren't worth **** - that's both a recruiting and development fail. I've no idea how good Barry is, but surely it takes more than one Fall camp to have a major impact on the technique / play of the Oline.

As I've said before, Enos needs to swallow his pride on this one and take the Oline out of the game as much as possible.

The Reed thing, I suspect he saw the writing on the wall - he's unathletic and the offence is moving away from that type of Olineman.

This.

Plus, more than one offseason in a new S&C program.

Are there things systematically you can help? Sure. I like it to Richt's first year where after 4-4 start, Miami abandoned the I formation and put Kaaya in the gun and really did a concerted effort to get rid of the ball quick. When it did, the canes averaged over 100 more yards a game rushing and that started the beginning of a winning streak.

Can Enos chip? Sure. But Why when the tight ends you are using are weapons and you want them to do what they can to help score points. Can Enos spread you out (I prefer this based on opinion) but it is not like the offensive line won't get tested. Lots of spread teams give up sacks. UNC btw has given up 19 sacks to Miami's 18 (Searels again)

I just think that if Miami is going to be serious coastal contenders year in and year out and beyond....the roster management ESPECIALLY along the offensive line needs to improve. AND the roster retention NEEDS to improve.

I can talk about Manny's roster management on defense. He has been here 4 years. (secondary and linebacker moving forward are concerns)
I can comment that this staff has a problem along the offensive line because the roster management of the previous staff left them in the position that they have started 3 freshmen along the offensive line....who....have played like freshmen

Cleveland Reed must have been a huge bust because for the staff to not at least TRY a lineup of Scaife-Reed-Gaynor-Donaldson-Campbell is crazy to me.

We had a lot of “projects” that unfortunately didn’t pan out. Hillary, Dykstra, George Brown. And some “high level prospects” that haven’t lived up to there star ranking. Herbert and Donaldson come to mind.

And a grad transfer that is the biggest “acquisition” hype flop since JR Mounts. (Tommy Kennedy)

All this is a recipe for disaster.

Try to remain factually correct. Manny didn’t bring in Kennedy. Right and Searles did. Also, how exactly was Manny to prevent Reed from transferring?
Um idk, maybe be a head coach and talk the kid out of it! You know kind of like he did with Thomas. This isn’t rocket science here and we are no position to be letting talent walk off this team without a fight.

I did not blame Diaz for the depth of the the OL. (Richt Searels)
Diaz handing the keys to someone is his choice. But his ultimate responsibility as head coach
I appreciate the honesty. I have the capability of a bad take here and there......but I promise you I didn't succumb to the pomposity of group think lol

I just know when I said Manny Diaz I am not impressed, people assumed that I blame Manny for the offensive line woes. No, I did not. I just am upset at the departures, the recruiting misses, the overall lack of development there what seems like it has been going on for a very long time now.

My question is and keep in mind Roman I love your work....how is this on Manny?

I think we as fans assume Manny "knew" what was happening everywhere and he is responsible for everything happening now.

I disagree with this. I fell into this category too.

Manny deserves 2 year like every other coach. I dont like some of what I have seen. I like some of what I have seen.

I qouted you because unlike every other post you have made this seemed opinionated and personally biased which is fine.....but usually you are...more X's and O's?

It's a 7 win team at best partly because of the OL. Punting and recovering our own fumbles is about all this team does well. We stink at 3rd down conversions, penalties, kick coverage, pass protection, forcing turnovers, short yardage, clock management, recruiting, 4th down defense, blitzing, yards after catch, ball security, adjustments, timing, scoring off turnovers, execution, pace, and a lot of other things.

What would you like to see as the starting OL? And, if they put in the OL lineup that you want and it performs worse, will you start a new thread stating that you were wrong.

Also, are you going to acknowledge that you were incorrect on Kennedy?
So you can tell the future now Micheal J Fox? Give me a break, at this point try everyone you got out there because it can’t get any worse! Roman pointed out all the miss steps this JV staff has made but to me it’s no surprise seeing as our HC never once played football at any level and his only
Knowledge of the game before he hood winked someone into letting him coach was as an employee at espn. Think about that for minute and let it marinate. Our coach never played and was a production assistant at espn. Lmao!

You talk a big game, and I really like your video analysis, but you really have no idea what is actually happening behind closed doors within the program. Everything you are saying in this thread is pure conjecture, and some of it is not even factually correct.
And you know what’s happening behind closed doors Mr insider. Well please
Do share and enlighten us all with what you know is happening besides a bunch of JV coaches and grad assistants all looking at each other with a deer in headlights look while simultaneously blaming the players for everything. Get real dude!

How much of that lack of depth at DB and LB is due to injury though?

I am more x's and o's on this site. More opinionated when I am on the Orange bowl Boy podcast and when I wrote for TOS. Jut stewed on this all week and I wanted to purge. Bye week blues I guess. I am disappointed in Manny and the fact his offense (Which he knew was an issue and fired his entire staff) would rank in such a quagmire of ineptitude along the offensive line. That is all. It is not all doom and gloom. Eventually this offensive line will get a little older and it is really young. The whole offense in general actually.

And yes. STA for the win.

Here’s a great idea.....if our problem is that we don’t have talent at the OL, then GET MORE TALENT THERE.

Recruit better players, and hit up the transfer portal.

Yes it’s Manny’s fault. The buck stops with him. He had all summer long to get us a tackle, and the best he could bring in was Zion Nelson and Tommy Kennedy.

That ain’t getting it done. And how many 5-star tackles do we have committed right now that would be able to step in and start day one?

FIX the problem.

You get what you pay for.

Honestly I would have been happier with Cutcliffe than Diaz. He even managed to win the ACC coastal in 2013, a feat which Miami only achieved in 2017.

Jesus H Christ. Typing that it dawned on me just how dead our program is. Winning the coastal once in 20 years.

F#ck the BOT.

A lot of reflection for me on the bye week. My inescapable haunting trigger are the two consecutive plays late in the second half vs Central Michigan where Zion Nelson got beat clean twice in a row. Then you add the first game vs. Florida where he is inexplicably stuck in his stance while the pass rush casually passes him bye like a statue.

Then there was John Campbell. His spacial awareness and feel for the position was so critically not in tune that he stuck out on film like a sore thumb. He thus graded out lower then any other Miami offensive lineman on Pro Football Focus vs UF and was replaced the following game. Two Freshmen. I get it.

A deep dive will show Miami ranks tied for 125th in the nation in sacks allowed (with only four games played) There are only five teams in the country who average over four sacks given up per contest:
  • Old Dominion 4.0
  • Tulsa 4.0
  • Miami 4.5
  • Akron 4.6
  • USF 5.0
Not necessarily the who's who in college football and Miami is the ONLY P5 team on the list. Conversely for reference I listed the top 3 ACC schools in protecting the quarterback and it may be a surprise for some. You would figure the defending national champ would be on the list (they are) but two teams you are killing in recruiting are doing a fine job keeping their QB upright. (Duke by the way started off the year facing Alabama)

  • Duke .25
  • Boston College .6
  • Clemson .8
Sacks allowed isn't the only metric that defines offensive line greatness but when you consider Miami is 82nd in the country in yards per rush, the offensive line is not the strength of this team. Not even close. It is not even average. But why?

So many aspects that are hard to digest but ultimately the coaching staff needs to take a little heat here for their decisions along the line thus far. Say what you will, but announcing Campbell would remain a starter after a porous week zero and wrapping it up in a bravado cape of "We are building a monster" was inexplicably tone deaf. You supplanted him the very next week and the only thing that was monstrous was the claim.

You sold the collective fan base on this year's starting left tackle being a Butler transfer that the Oklahoma Sooners wanted in Tommy Kennedy. I honestly don't think I have even seen an episode of MTV's Catfish that was this outlandish because Kennedy can't even crack the three deep at center.

Continue the miss parade as Cleveland Reed, who was once applauded by former head coach Mark Richt as a starter of the future, left the program. Currently my numbers show Miami with 74 scholarship players. 11 below the 85 scholarship mark. I have to ask though, are these sanctions self imposed? I just don't get it.

This program needs to get a sense of itself because the statement "Zion is the best we have out there" should not be true. Four games in he is playing like a true freshman who needs a couple more years in this system before he makes any kind of steadfast impact. Which is fine because I believe in his ability long term. But after last week I don't see how this staff continues to march him out there. They shouldn't be in the position that they needed him to be.

That is the reality this current coaching staff faces. You knew what you had on the roster. You tried to fix it in the transfer market and you got catfished. You let some young develop-able talent walk off under the often default guise of "We only want guys who want to be Hurricanes." This mind you is after the countless sales jobs you employ in promising kids a chance at early playing time. You are 11 under the scholarship cap and lastly, you continue to march those kids out there.

This doesn't matter what offensive system you run this time. We cannot just chip and block with tight ends or spread them out of this mess. Eventually you need to put offensive linemen on an island and expect them to do their job. An offensive system change is just masking the more systemic issue that is deep rooted in the program less visible.

This offensive line is playing like a program who is dependent on freshman. And they have proven with 33% of the season now behind us, that is exactly what they are. Manny Diaz, I am not impressed. Butch Barry, I am not impressed. Yeah as a fan I expect better roster management and a team over a 50% blue chip ratio to be much more competitive. Especially along the offensive line.

You didn't have to give me the fact-laden thesis. I've been saying Miami has NO TALENT on the offensive line since August 1st, 2019. Matter of fact, I said O-line and QB play would DETERMINE Miami's final record in 2019. dUh

Oh. And one more notion. Thank Buddha the Coastal Division SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Again this season.

Nevertheless, thanks for the insightful thesis. hUh

Interesting

You are not impressed with the depth of our OL? How can you blame Diaz for this?

Furthermore how can you blame Diaz considering the offensive "keys" were handed to Enos and Barry. Blame Diaz for his staffing choices. Blaming him for OL as if the DC had say in recruiting OL makes no sense. Blaming him for the scheme makes no sense.

Sorry this is one of your worst posts in that regard.

The groupthink is sinking into the staff of CIS.
Correct us all if we’re wrong Moron but I think Diaz hired Enos and Barry. And I also think mr espn production assistant thought it would be a good idea to give carte blanch to those two bums with no oversight. So I think we can very much blame Diaz for all of this seeing as they were his corching decisions but your a porster anyways so I guess it’s par for the course that a porster will support a corch. Lol

Wait a second!! The HERD continually says you can "scheme" around a bad offensive line.

They eviscerated Mark Richt for not "scheming" around last year's underperforming offensive line.

Don't you think it would be prudent to hire the highly qualified HERD members who have been so boisterous in this area so they can teach the coaches how to "scheme" around an offensive line that has mastered the tricky olé block?
